CPU Folding

Is CPU folding still worth it?

I stopped F@H a long time ago when GPU and PS3 folding become so competitive, then stopped BOINC :(

Should I get back in?

especially if you have an i7

CPU folding is very much worth it. Quad cores can make almost as much as high end video cards.

i7s can make double, triple or even 4 times as much as modern GPUs.

My i7 can is currently getting right around 50,000 PPD as I type, my best vid card a GTX570.... caps out at 17000.

Yep, depends on which CPU. I do nothing but CPU folding - not a GPU to be found in my farm.

CPU all the way.

I use GPUs in my borgs, but that is about it.

CPUs perform the best and consume less power than GPUs. If I was building a farm from scratch, I wouldn't buy any GPUs.

How about maturity of the client

When I stopped F@H it was because SMP clients were PITA

I switched to BOINC which let me manage all my clients remotely through boincstats

The new v7 folding client has quite a few quirks and I personally don't think it's ready for release. The older v6 client is very stable and fairly easy to set up.

The v6 SMP client is very simple -- it's basically a single .EXE to download and run. There's no longer a complicated install process.

There's also the GPU tracker program that will install the CPU client for you with relative ease.

Thanks for all the help

I have been running the v7 client for a few days now on one of my machines, how do I track it's progress and score? This new client is radically different from what v5 and v6 were like!

Also is the [H] still folding?

Progress and score are tracked from within the client GUI. From what I hear, the client currently doesn't properly calculate points for SMP units that use the bonus points system; unfortunately, the new client is also incompatible with monitoring software, so there's no way to get around that. If you want an easy way to monitor your client, you're better off using the v6 client, either by itself or through the GPU Tracker program.

Of course the [H] is still folding. We wouldn't be having this discussion otherwise ;).

I am finding the FAH Control to be very unstable

I am not thinking I will be able to be in top 20, if I can then I will switch over to the [H] team!

It takes quite a lot to get into the top 20, but if you've got the hardware, then go for it. Even if you can't, any contribution to the team is very helpful and is very much appreciated. The team wouldn't be where it is if not for all the smaller contributors.

This!

We have hundres of people that fold and don't pull anywhere close to top 20 #s, but they are just as important to the team.

We are the [H]orde, not some small group of elite folders.

Plus one I agree with the above

Thanks for the encouragement guys

I'm switching over to team 33 slowly

Can someone please let me know why the units are not uploading?

Can you post your log file? That will help us figure out what is going on.

Absolutely
I am having some errors on a number of machines, while other machines are fine
I am working on switching stuff over towards Team 33

Let me know if this is an issue which will pass over time or if I will have to abort the WUs?

Relevant portion reproduced.

That's new to me, but I am totally unfamiliar with client v7

Anybody else?

I'm failing to upload to the same server. Stanford stats show the server as "Not Accepting"

H.

Haha. Funny thing is, in my mind 10k ppd is still a lot.

It wasn't that long ago.

Okay I think I am in Top 92 producers now

I am having lots of issues, I was told I could do 100k ppd on 1 machine?

That depends on the hardware you have.

What kinds of issues are you having?

The only machines that get 100K+ ppd alone either have 2 processors and overclock or have 4 processors. I suppose you could run 4 higher-end graphics cards in a single proc machine and get there, or get some high end Xeon or AMD MC chips and run two of them at stock speed. Aside from the very few (3, and one doesn;t fold for us) 4 processor AMD machines, the only other 100K+ ppd machines I can think of around here are dual hex SR-2s.

A twin stock Xeon could do it - but would have to be running top end hex cores (x5670 or better) under linux, my asus is currently pumping out about 90k PPD under win 7, i haven't switched because i use it as my backup machine and also gpu fold. The next one will run linux though

Oh, I think tear is running a quad magny set up as well, and i thoughht we have 3 on our team?

The best I could get on a single processor machine is 68k with my 980x at 4.4 ghz folding a 6900 WU, no GPU folding.

I get 100k PPD on 22 of 24 threads using 2x x5680s running stock clocks. 2 Threads are reserved for my GPUs in the rig that adds even more PPD ~20K PPD more each they are 580s OC like a banchee.

Waiting for bulldozer but early reports don't seem promising

Nothing is certain until it gets benched, I would wait and see - rumored release date is June 11th. The real fun will be when they launch the server chips in Q3. Then see what happens to the PPD of a few members......

I do not have many GPUs, most of my systems are just quad core AMD athlon's
