CPU Folding not worth it?

Just loaded up the new SMP client and I am seeing about 10 minutes per 1% (Phenom x4 9850 @ 2.7Ghz) but this seems like really crappy output versus single GTX 460 (900/100/1800) which is doing 1% every 90 seconds.

Is there something wrong in the config/setup or is that just what CPU PPD's look like?

If second then I am going to complete this unit and then remove SMP client since it is not worth it for additional power/heat/etc.

Thanks!

Run HFM.net - GPU units are not the same points per %.

CPU folding is very much worth it the higher you go - it is not as attractive as GPU folding on older slower machines... talking strictly on points. The science is still very much worth it, and probably for not much more power draw, given that it will be on and running for the GPUs.

the WU's are totally different. the cpu WU's are much much larger then the gpu WU's. to give an example a finished gpu WU is roughly 1-5MB, a finished SMP work unit is between 9-12 MB with the bigadv WU's over a couple hundred MB. a 10 minute TPF is actually pretty good for that processor. on my phenom II x4 940 @ 3.4Ghz my TPF is 5:30-6:30 on the faster SMP WU's and 15-18 minute TPF on the 6701/02 WU's.

The SMP work-unit is a lot bigger and more complex than the GPU.
So it folds slower but is worth more points.

As you've just started folding SMP work-unit, you won't be getting the bonus points untill after you have finished the 10th one.
After that your PpD for the SMP units will go up.

Luck .......... :D

I am running FahSpy and it tells me that my PPD is ~3.2k for CPU but ~12K for CPU so I am not so concerned with the time to complete but the result.

Power draw is less of a concern as well but my study where the PC is (H2O cooled) is about 5 - 8 degrees warmer then normal which makes it uncomfortable.

So even though I cannot do bigadv (4 cores only) there is still a bonus structure for CPU folding? What are my PPD's likely to go up to after bonus is in effect?

Thanks!

3.2k PPD sounds about right for that processor. if you can overclock it to 3Ghz you may get into the 3800 PPD range but the phenom I's are not the greatest folding processors due to the low clocks and the fact that the client doesn't take full advantage of AMD processors. also the gpu client has a slight effect on the smp client performance. you lose about 800-1000 PPD on the smp client to the gpu but in the end the 12k PPD from the GPU makes up for the loss on the SMP client. if the temps are uncomfortable crack the window a little bit, but its not the cpu causing the the temp spike, its the GTX 460 that is. the gpu is putting off far more heat then that cpu is.

me personally, i fold just for the pure fact that it keeps my room warm. i've never had to use the heater in my apartment because my room is about 10-15 degree's warmer then the rest of the apartment and since i spend the most time in here it works great for me. if it gets to warm i just open the door to the room and the temp drops 10-15 degrees within a few minutes. plus the fact that its cheaper to heat my room folding then it is to turn on these stupid electric baseboard heaters.

Thanks for the info. The GPU + CPU is the heat problem, either taken by itself is fine. Not really an option since I live in a house and my wife keeps it unreasonably warm.

are you able to close the vents in that room to see if you can control the temps better in the room?

I'm a huge fan of strategically using folding PCs to keep the house warm

Yah, main, rig #2 and server along with a 60" plasma TV all keep my 'cave toasty too. Beer fridge has to work overtime tho and the noise is starting to bug me when I watch a movie sometimes. Ah the price you gotta pay for cold beer ...:D

Bummer. My fridge is close off in a storage area.

lol... my fridge is downstairs... away from my man cave... so by the time I have decided what I want to eat... I can eat anything (3-4 stair trips)

interesting... I will have to take a look at running a4 on some older machines...

This thread has just given me an idea. You know how you get chilled compartments in cars? I'm going to dissemble a cheap mini fridge and make a chilled desk draw. I knew there was something missing in my life and this is it. Thanks guys!

Build in a warmer one on the other side of the desk for your tamales!
