CPU Can't OC anymore

Hello everybody, I have a Phenom II 965 BE and I had it running at 3.8 Ghz for about a month or two and suddenly when I restarted my system wouldn't boot. So I reset the BIOS and I tried to set it back to 3.8 and everytime it failed to boot. I removed the video cards and RAM and no matter what it wont go above 3.4 anymore so can someone help me figure out what happened?

Is it overheating? Is there dust on whatever is cooling it? Have you tried a little more voltage?
 
I dont think it is the chip or the board or the system ;-)

I would check to ensure that you are applying all the proper bios settings and not just telling it to clock to 3.8 in hopes that it will stick.
 
No it's not overheating, I have dusted the 212 and I ran 3 instances of prime 95 for like 15 minutes and it seemed stable so I left it, and @tangoseal do you know anything about overclocking phenoms? some advice would be awesome :)
 
1st of all, prime95 for 15 mins doesnt tell you much about long term stability. You need to run it for at least 12 hours.

2ndly, did you originally do the overclock or did someone else?

It's best you read up guides on OCing a 965 chip. It seems to be a popular model, so I imagine there's quite a few guides for it.

Multiplier is unlocked, should be easy to up to 3.8GHz by 1.38 to 1.45v. Also make sure you CPU-NB is at stock at first (2000MHz).

Don't mess with HTT (stock 2000MHz).

I usually leave my cpu settings at stock in bios and overclock within windows with K10stat. With this program I start with a low 2GHz for idle and then go for 3.9GHz at 100% load. works a charm.
 
try to over clock it slowly 0.2GHz each time and if runs stable at 3.6 than go for 0.1GHz and see if you can get it.
 
ruling everything else out (pin-pointing other hardware causing issues, properly maintained & clean case etc), as the other members mentioned, sounds like the PC wasn't fully validated at overclocked settings. the deneb phenom II's are relatively easy to OC compared to thubans. a couple of guides that helped me...
