CPU Bottleneck?

I am thinking of upgrading my video card in my machine. Since I have a bunch of money in Gift Cards, I am thinking I might go WAY up the video card scale vs. just a minor jump. I am pretty sure that the rest of my system would be pretty slow in comparison to the card. Would that affect my gameplay beyond what having my slow CPU would normally do?

Is there a good website (or message on here) that explains this?

I do plan to upgrade the rest of my system, but that will wait until later this year, I figured I'd go ahead and get one of the updates now, and get some enjoyment out of it.

First, could you provide the specifications of your system? Second, I agree with you. I wouldn't update my system right now. I would wait later on so you can upgrade to a DX10 capable card.

I wasn't sure exactly what I had back at home when I typed that. I currently have an AMD64 3000+ processor.

Part of me wants to wait, but yet... the call of a new card is going hard... :) I have thought of doing a partial upgrade and do better later, but not sure if that is the right way to go either..

fixed your link, dont post a link to a link to a link to the page. just post a link to THE page. lol.

Q2 07 is a little bit more then a day. thats april at the earliest.

as for you CPU bogging you down, I'm really getting tired of hearing this. I'm also tired of explaining it. I think your gonna be the last person I give the info to, everyone else can just be disolusioned that a CPU will have some major impact on performance.

It doesnt. to all the "MrWizard is a n00btard!" have a comparison, atholon w/ 8800 vs C2D X6800 w/ 8800

Im sure your all busy so ill cut and paste a few things....
the Core 2 Duo system:
C2Dw8800.gif

And the Atholon Systems:
Atholonw8800.gif

If your all thinking "OMG HAX" the only reason the Atholons score better is because they gain from better drivers, but regardless, you it prooves the point: you can expect C2D w/ an 8800 to score maybe 1-3% then an Atholon X2 w/ 8800

notice the atholons also have 16X af as compaired to 8X on the C2Ds. I picked oblivion because it seems to be the only game capibile of dilivering a blow to the 8800s. As your resolution increases, the workload for the GPU becomes greater, and it actually starts having trouble delivering all the frames. A good high speed monitor has a refreash rate of maybe 100, so anything above 100fps will show up visible to you as 100fps. As such any comparison that gives your FPS above 100fps is really mute. It can be used to test future-proof-ness. But thats about it.

Even Single core CPUs are fine. If you can kill the majority of background apps, your single core system will give very similar FPS to what a dual core system would, at the same clock.

As the above poster* said, RAM is more important that your CPU.

HOWEVER, it IS only a 3000+, so an 8800 would definatly be bottlenecked SOMEWHAT by that. Think of going up to at least a 3800 X2 or something like that. They'll only set you back c.$200 or less, and will last you a while.

more like $135 (newegg)

I have 1 gig of Ram now, I also currently have a 939 Mobo, would I need to get both a CPU and Mobo to go to the AMD X2?

Or you could pay $180 (including shipping) for a E6600 on eBay and wait two weeks for it to ship.

If I were making a decision, I would wait till Crysis comes out and base my purchases on what will play that game on DX10 effortlessly (or in medium quality). At the moment, I am saving up money to do exactly that.

I guess I should just wait until I can buy the new machines.. It is just so hard.. those Gift Cards are calling to me.... "Spend me... Spend me...."
