The smell it the kicker... I don't open, under warranty. I'm about to pull FAH off all production due to this issue. Switched PSU's but have 250+ of these out there.

The main reason they have decided not to support nVidia cards at the moment is a) branching capabilities, and b) ATi supports 32bit datatypes, while nVidia only supports 24bit, which, without some extra work-around (which would slow things down), would mean less accurate science.

Unfortunately, I dont beleive pre-X1X00 series cards will work either (x800s/x850s.. etc.), which sucks because I have 2 or 3 boxes with x800xls in them (and they're cheap to get at ~$120 CDN per card.)..

It's cool to be talking about pixel shaders per dollar though, at 5 and 10 dollars a pop.. really its like talking about the price of CPU cores per dollar, in a sense.. as that is the role they'll be playing, in a less scalar, more-vector sense of course ;)

Nivida GPUs have supported FP32 since the GeForce FX, it's the reason that the GeForce FX performs so poorly in source Engine games in DirectX 9 mode. The branch prediction is the big bonus for ATI cards...GeForce 7 cards can fold, it's just that they require significantly more code optimizations in the code of the folding client to overcome the lack of branch prediction and fold at the same level as an ATI GPU that has branch prediction.

Can it actually run three cards though? I know there are boards starting to surface with 3x x16 slots with two for GPU and one for Physics.... but I guess I have never really questioned if that 3rd slot could power another graphics card (just not in xfire).
 
Any word as to whether the GPU client will support crossfire? And if so, what kind of performance gains could be seen?

Why stop at dual core........
Dual Quad core is more to the point.
Quad Quad would be just a little over the top .............. :D

One thing that will be interesting to see is how many CPU cycles the GPU client needs.

I am guessing as many as the slave process for FAH on a CPU, aka not many.

I am WICKED excited about this stuff :D

Folding@Home on ATI GPU's: a major step forward

Partially, it says:
We will make a formal announcement of the client at the ATI Stream Computing Event in San Francisco on Friday September 29, 2006 (this is open for press personnel, not for the general public), and then (assuming everything looks reasonable), start an open beta for the console client on Monday October 2 with the GUI GPU client (with real time visualization) to follow.
