I guess this is a bad time to have a nVidia card. ;) It's nice to see that this has finally come to fruition. Now all we can hope for is a new console client to drop too. :D

 
Awesome, awesome! I think I need a new computer. If the processor speed isn't to much of a factor, maybe a lowend AMD X2 with a mobo. that has 1 or 2 pci-express combined with a ATI gpu will be the most cost efficient. I'm really looking forward to seeing the numbers.

Edit: I need to figure out a way to twist this into a possible research grant purchase. Maybe, how can the GPU accelerate X? That would be some cool research.

 
It'd be nice if they invited someone like FLECOM since he is the single highest producer.

Here is the current information from the High performance FAQ
Which GPUs will be supported? We have not made any final decisions on this issue. However, our software will likely require the very latest GPUs from ATI (especially now that the newest ATI GPUs support 32 bit floating point operations). Previous work of ours used NVIDIA GPUs as well, but we have now concentrated on ATI GPU's as they allow for significant performance increases for FAH over NVIDIA's GPU's (at least at the current generation). Our GPU cluster has 25 1900XT's and 25 1900 XTX's. We find a considerable performance increase of 1900XT's even over 1800XT's, due to the architectural differences between the R580 and R520 GPU's. Our code will run on R520's, but considerably more slowly than R580. We're very much looking forward to trying out R600's.

Yes, open beta means everyone (with a supported GPU).
 
I may or maynot GPU fold in my farm.
It all depends on the PpD the GPU client puts out.

At the moment my folding boxen pull 140 watts from the wall and runs twin CPU clients for ~ 250-700 PpD.
A 1900XT vid card uses around 110 watts so will probably double my power bill.
So if the new GPU client can run 3x faster than the CPU client in terms of PpD then its worth shutting half the farm down and running the other half a mix of CPU/GPU folding.

If not then only my main boxen will GPU fold when it gets upgraded.

So its all going to be what they benchmark on, the 1800XT or the 1900XT.
How many PpD they bench at.
And if they bench on the 1800XT, how much faster the 1900XT runs.

Just my 0.02p worth.

According to various links on stanfords website, they are running x1900XT and x1900xtx's. Supposedly they are "a lot" faster than x1800's

It's not as much as I think you're thinking. 110W * 24 hours * 30 days ~= 80kWh. At $0.10/kWh, that's $8/month. At $0.15/kWh, that's $12.

The air conditioning alone in our house accounts for 2/3 of our summer electric bill, to the tune of almost $200/month, plus the rest of our power.
 
The only thing I'm not looking forward to is my 1900XT's fan going full blast all the time.
Oh well, I have good headphones :D
 
This is great news, I was thinking about this over the last few days with my X1950xtx on the way.
 
An X1600 will actually fold close to the same level as an X1800, as the X1600, like the X1900s, has three pixel shader lines per pixel pipeline. Stanford's reference to the X1900 blowing away the X1800 points to the pixel shaders doing the bulk of the work in the GPU folding client, meaning that X1600 and X19_0 are the best choices for GPU folders in terms cost, performance/watt, etc.

Looking on the 'Egg right now, X1900GTs get you 36 pixel shaders for $200, X1900XTs with 48 pixel shaders for $250, and X1600XTs with 12 pixel shaders are $130. It's pretty obvious that the X1900 series blows away the X1600 on initial cost, getting you about twice as many pixel shaders per dollar. (It's just over $5/shader on an X1900, while over $10/shader on an X1600) However, the X1900 boards have power consumption and cooling/noise concerns that you will need to address for 'round the clock use.
 
What about an X1300? Assuming because it's the X1000 series, they should all be compatible with the software, but what do I know? See related post on the VisionTek x1300 PCI topic in the forum...my theory is to jam a x1300 PCI in an old 1000 mhz compaq I've got laying around and see if the GPU client will run on it.

If it runs well, it bodes well for my other boxen.

FYI tomorrow big press release should know much more.

Frankly right now 99.9% of how things will actually work is unknown near as I can tell. Point system, which cards can run on and all that.
 
I don't think nVidia will be invited to the party just yet--I believe it has something to do with the branching ability of the Radeons. And I'm not quite jumping on the bandwagon yet, primarily because of the noise issue with current ATi cards.

VJ et al are going to have to do something new with the points system to make sure that everyone is happy. Remember, we're talking about video cards that can do 40 times the work of a general-purpose CPU. I'm pretty sure you won't be getting 4000ppd for GPU folding, even though you're contributing more. My guess is that they'll benchmark a X1900XT at somewhere between 300-600ppd, and base the WUs off that. This probably means different WU servers for GPU folding as well.

Na, I've got a 6 year old and might need to look into that stuff too. Nieces and newphews too which I try and keep in better computers than myself. Just made me laugh was all...I am not alone!

Somehow I doubt tomorrows press release will cover the vital issues.... point system!

What are the real requirements for a PSU to run the ATI 1900XT type cards? Buying a new video card is ok (can game too) but I find buying PSU's to be most boring.

the X1900XT takes 110 W on full load, the X1900XTX takes 120W. If you've got an X2 to go with it, that's another 90W or so (depends on which one you have), and estimate another 50W for the rest of the system. That's 250W total. I'd say anything 350W and better would be plenty, assuming the PSU's rating isn't totally bunk, and you aren't running a stack of drives.

And yes, PSUs are boring.

I think I have a 450 or so Antec at home, need to check. Came in a pretty box...

I know, 2x PSU's in the system. That was such a mess last time I did that :(
 
sweet and I just got a x1950xtx last week. now I won't even need to turn the heat on when winter hits.

guessing 500 watt plus with a 6 pin PCI Express power connector
 
I'm suprised Spectre posted without mentioning this, and I know it's OT but seriously needs to be mentioned here:

Watts on a PSU don't mean squat. Amps on each rail do. An X1900 series card is going to pull on +12. If your PSU has gobs of +5 and +3.3 power, but less than 20A on +12, it's going to struggle to power an X1900 and X2 in a typical desktop load scenario (HDD, DVD drive, etc)
 
Please keep -realistic- PSU recommendations coming.

20 A on the 12v rail,. great place to start.

X1900Xt + PCI-e Mobo + conroe + RAM?

I need to get back into the game. 400 ppd makes baby jesus cry.
