Could Blizzard pull off a WoW console version?

Since the graphics aren't cutting edge, they could put it on the PS2 even..The USB keyboard would be a must, but all the UI mods wouldn't be there. Maybe they could steal some ideas from the 3rd party mods and make the users pay extra per month to use them.

Sounds quite stupid. Why? Consoles are not made for online gaming, lag would be terrible. You need at least 1.5gb of ram to run the game on max and make it look pretty and it does still look quite pretty. I hardly doubght taht a PS2 could handle WoW on pc's medium settings, and on medium it does look like shit.

Really...consoles are not for online gaming?
Tell that to the millions on Xbox live & PSN, and some on the Wii network.

Using the PS2 would not work, you could do it on todays console easily, but would they, no. They would have to write the game for the console it would go on, then, to be fair, it would have to work with the "standard" controller. Since not everyone could/would be able to buy the keyboard/mouse combo.

PS2 owners are used to shitty graphics by today's standards. Kinda like FFXI or Everquest...both of them were MMO's on the PS2...

I guess my main point is, that WoW is a "cash cow", the the console bridge would just add another udder to the cow :D

They PS2 Keyboard is only like $15 bucks...and I think any WoW player would be more than willing to spend that for macros.

The question isn't could they, but would they. The almost certainly could, but they also almost certainly wouldn't. Blizzard is not a company to half ass things. They've canceled several titles that were already well into their development stages simply because they weren't up to snuff. I can certainly see Blizzard maybe putting an MMO on a console some time in the future, maybe even one set in the Warcraft universe. However, it won't be WoW, not as we know it at least.

They could do it.
Look at Final Fantasy online. That game is more graphically demanding and it plays like butter on a ps2.

I see absolutely NO way for it to work simply because of RAM. Sitting in Shattrath you use well over 600mb in texture memory alone.

They would figure something out if it moved to consoles. Hell, oblivion runs like shit on a PC with less than a gig of system memory but does just fine on the ~200mb the PS3 has. Wow is way less demanding, so I'm sure they could get it running on the current consoles easily and Ps2 if they really really wanted, though I seroiusly doubt it will happen.

Flaming is not my intention...

That being said..

If FFXI and Everquest (shitty games IMO) can be that popular as an MMO on a console, why not try and get a great MMO like WoW? Maybe not have it setup just like the PC version, but a port of it. Where PS2, PS3, XBox, and the 360 could all play in the same "world". Just add some extra flare to the newest consoles.

Im not sure if the Wii could cut it in this conversation.

Apperantly they are,but ask a player who has been gaming online on X360 and PS series. THey will moan about the delay, and once they try playing online on PC, they see the vast improvement. I do not see a console being able to stand up to taht.

WoW wouldn't run on something like a console since it was originally written for the PC (although possibly the 360). However in FFXI's case, the game was written to take advantage of the PS2 and to this day the game actually loads faster and runs smoother on the PS2 (the PS2s that are still functioning correctly) when compared to even the most recent PCs. However this is also a limitation since they don't add new/advanced textures/models since the PS2 can't handle it whereas a PC could.

Lag is only an issue because the current console offerings rely on one player to host, rather than providing a dedicated server. A console MMO would most certainly have dedicated servers. There's nothing inherent in a console's architecture that makes its network card slower or faster than a pc's. XBL and PSN are just matchmaking services.

royalty fees, why pay console royalties when you can release on PC and get millions anyways?

I'm not sure, when special events happen, like the opening of a new zone or a new raid instance happens, there is around 500ish people in one spot on my server. I'm not sure how well that would fly on any console that is out atm. Thats not including all of the textures and all of the spell casts going on. (PvP server)

Damn you couldn't be more wrong. I run WoW @ 1680 X1050 will ALL settings maxed and experience ZERO fps lag or lag of any kind. I have 1 GB ram and a 7800gt PCIe.

Even in Shatt at peak hours? Or in front of Kara/SSC? I find it hard to believe that you experience ZERO lag whatsoever, especially since this is WoW that we're talking about.

.

Just had to jump in here real quick.

What games are these people playing?... just curious.

I am inclined to disbelieve this statement.

I don't get any FPS lag in wow...and I have all setting maxed. I don't think I have ever noticed a bad fps in WoW. But I do have an 8800GTS so I am sure the helps alot.

You need to re-read his entire statement. I don't receive and graphical lag at all, but you also have a next gen card running at least 2gb system ram.

Thats because he is sitting in goldshire dueling level 10's all day :D
even with 2gb of ram you will still lag in shatt, or waiting in front of kara when a bunch of people are there to raid, but it does not have to do with your computer hardware but instead network throughput.

As for the OP's question, no, it would not work. It would have to be totally rewriten for anything other than the 360, so you can take PS2 and PS3 off the table right now. As for the 360, I really don't see it being strong enough to play this game. The graphics are not demanding but the texture memory is, that and the game itself is 12.7 gigs on my harddrive, which could of course fit on an HD-DVD, but load times would be ridiculously slow

Doesn't matter what system you have...if you are sitting in the portal of shatt, ur gonna get lag. Period.

to many different keys and functions in WoW to make any good for console....

Actually with microsofts new PDA style keyboard I dont think its impossible, youd still be able to communicate via text and they could possibly add in some VOIP for groups. Its possible and with blizzard swimming in cash flow I dont see why they wouldnt try this out.

QFT? Bad coding is the cause of the lag. I'm using the word lag loosely..what do you want me to call it? A silly slide show?

Slide show? What kind of system do you have. The s939 rig in my sig pulls +30fps CONSTANTLY in shatt.

I think it comes down to the usual "what's you definition of smooth/laggy".

I have 2gigs of ram and an x1900xt running at 1680x1050. Runs smooth (50+ FPS) most of the time.

But the "lag" I think most refer to is the sudden drop in FPS from time to time. Going to Shatt, I sometimes go from 50FPS down to 35FPS, 15 FPS has a very noticeable "lag" effect.

Sure, 30 FPS is more than acceptable for MMORPG's, but when the FPS fluctuates by 15-20 FPS the there is a noticeable difference. Had this been the difference between 60 and 80 FPS, then no, there wouldn't be noticeable impact for most people.

To the OP, there's no way for consoles to run something like this even with a keyboard and mouse. Not enough ram as mentioned before, and most importantly, at least for me; How many WoW players can live without ANY mods. No Titan Panel, no Deadlyboss Mod, no Autioneer, no Monkeyquest, no Cartagropher, etc......that would just be insanity.

Can easily be answered if you checked out my sig in rig..

Since Blizz knows most/all WoW players use mods, maybe they would make another UI for the console version. That would be a necessity.

I see absolutely NO way for it to work simply because of RAM. Sitting in Shattrath you use well over 600mb in texture memory alone.

MMO's are very poorly optimized resource hogs, and a straight out port to a console would be a disaster. Then, trying to keep the console version compatible with the live PC releases? Yeah, right.

Not impossible, but too damn difficult.

But the "lag" I think most refer to is the sudden drop in FPS from time to time.

That is sad. Lag is a term exclusively pertinent to issues of network connectivity.

anybody in this thread who says WOW couldn't be played on the 360 console hasn't even played the 360 console. I own a 360 and a decent computer and have played WOW for a month or so..........

Gears of War, Ace Combat 6, Kameo, etc etc etc --- all look WAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY better than WOW.

Check out the new Ace Combat 6...the lines of reality and graphics start blurring at this point.

The 360 could easily play WOW --- there's no question.

and while you may not have a mouse and keyboard for every tom and harry playing they may not need it. Every player on xbox live has voice chat and if you could voice chat when you get within a certain range of someone that would suffice for communication.
