Hello everyone!

Just wanted to see if going with the Corsair 650W would be overkill? Also, will the Corsair fit in the case I got now?

I just bought a 9800gt card for a great price and I think my current psu won't cut it.

Current (dinosaur) rig:
Antec p180
Asus A8N-E with a socket 939 4400+
2gb ddr
7900gt (on its last legs)
3 sata drives
dvdrom
dvdrw
Antec SmartPower 450W psu

I'm also looking to purchase possibly another 2 sata drives in the near future.

Thanks in advance!

I have one, it's a good power supply. It's good to upgrade that before you bother with other components. Doesn't make sense trying to build a good, stable machine without a good PSU.

Your old PSU was perfectly capable of handling that load.

And yes you can have too mich power. If you have too big of a PSU, you won't be running it at optimal efficiency. You'll actually be wasting power. I was wondering why it was slightly hotter today....

Your old PSU was perfectly capable of handling that load.

If it was a stable PSU that is. The Smartpower line of PSUs are well known for above average failure rates due to a poor choice of capacitors that did not respond well under heat (Fuhjyyu) and poor cooling design that had the fan kick in at the last possible moment for cooling. Thus, the OP's new video card as well as any future expansion might put the entire system at danger.

Yes a good quality 450W PSU is more than enough for his system. But the Smartpower is not a quality PSU therefore I second the recommendation for the Corsair 650TX.

Thanks all...I bit the bullet and bought the Corsair =D

With $30 rebate, final cost will be around $70ish and change...Not bad for a quality PSU!

I have the Corsair VX450 in my rig (see sig), and my whole system maxed out (cpu and gpu) only draws 180 watts according to my Kill-A-Watt, so 650w will be more than enough....
