Last night, my kid brother's Power Supply died -- and took the motherboard with it.

So, in attempts to bail him out - I was getting him a new mobo/psu, I have an extra Q6600 that I'm not using that I intended to put into his PC once it was rebuilt (he currently has a P4-D, 3.0GHZ).

The hardware setup will be as follows;

4850
2x 2GB A-DATA DDR2-800
400GB WD
160GB WD
Philips DVD-RW
Q6600
Probably the GB EP45-DS3L mobo, unsure at the moment.

Will the 450 be enough power to handle this equipment? I feel it should be more than sufficient although it will inhibit upgrading later on..

I think it might be pushing it with that quad, perhaps the quality corsair psu can do it though,

As a counterpoint though, I just built a budget system for a buddy and its got an e5200 @3.6, 2x2gb of ddr 800, 2 hd's, 5 fans, DVDRW, and 8800GTS 512 all running rock solid with a thermaltake 430 watt. I definitely agree psu requirements are often overstated, but I have personally brought a quality 450 to its knees with an overclocked opteron 165, 8800gts, 3 hd's. and a few hd's. The 165 is a 120watt chip vs 95 for the Q6600, but I assume you're not going to leave that thing stock...;)

I figured the Q6600 would be the deciding factor. :/ It's a G0 stepping, so no point in leaving it stock! .. Guess I need to get the 520 or the 550, whichever is cheaper. :(

the 450 is actually a 500 w supply, capable of doing 570. it uses the exact same internal design as the earthwatts 500 (both are seasonic made), but with better components.

Not any more. The new Earthwatts PSUs are Delta made and use a different design altogether. Where did you get that 570W figure from?

Anyway, the Corsair 450VS will be more than enough for your needs.

There are plenty of ppl running that 450 with a quad. Its a nice PSU but you can pickup the larger models for not much more. Doesn't hurt to leave room for upgrades later on.

I think it'll be fine. I'm running a 485watt enermax with the same video card and processor, but also have more hard drives, optical drives and ram. I have no issues.
