I have a wd2500yd hdd and 2 or 3 times, now, it has lost files.
To give a couple examples...
D:\Mp3 is not accessible.
The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

Also, D:\Movies is empty. I was watching movies from it just last night.
There are files that I downloaded over the last week or two (7zip installer, realtek audio drivers, etc...) that show the file in windows explorer, but when I double-click, a command prompt opens and then disappears. Obviously the file is bad.
As I mentioned, this isn't the first time this has happened. I'm thinking that it has happened on a 2x120GB ide raid0, as well. If I back files up, repartition, reformat, and copy everything back then all seems to be well, again.
When I run chkdsk, I get tons of Recovering orphaned file instances.

What could be causing this to happen? What can I do to keep it from happening? I don't usually have anything super-important on my computer, but it's annoying as crap.

If it has been happening across multiple drives take a look at your hardware. Do you have any other issues with the computer? Bad RAM can cause filesystem corruption, might not be a bad idea to run memtester on it.
 
I'll give memtest a try, although I have ran it on other occasions without fail. I have corsair twinx-1024-pc3200-c2.
After running chkdsk, d:\mp3 and d:\movies came back. Some of the files work but most don't. Media player 6.4 gives a Class Factory error.
I'm running some different anti-virus scans, just to be safe, but I don't get virii so I doubt that's the issue.
Mentioning hardware...
I have noticed this on the same mobo (abit is7), but it has been different drives and different drive controllers. Stepping through the possibilities, I'm using a different video card and power supply than before when it happened with the raid0 setup. I stopped using raid0 thinking that was the problem. Seeing this, now restores my hope in raid0. I don't recall if this is the same ram as before or not.

Also, it seems that whenever this happens, data written to the drive after a certain date are the ones corrupted. For instance, I have winrar that I downloaded months ago and it's fine, but 7zip that I downloaded last week is corrupted.
Another problem that I'm seeing is that after chkdsk made the files re-appear, they are linked to the wrong data. There are a couple avi's that play a totally different file's video.

I noticed when this happens a lot of time it has to do with drivers. Give them a check.
