It does not matter they all do the same thing, read the delta to Tjmax stored the the cpus MSR register that is generated by the Digital Temp Sensors in the cpu die.
What matters is the options each program offers for monitoring etc, the look, and any other bells and whistles you might be interested in.
Most allow you to change the Tjmax value so you can make the temps come out to anything you want.
The option "show delta to Tjmax" is the only truely accuracte indication of the thermal state of the cpu.
So use whatever you like. It really does not matter, if they read the DTS value they will all agree as long as the Tjmax is set the same with maybe a 1C difference based on rounding errors, sample rate etc. etc.
Here is all we have AFAIK from Intel on proper Tjmax values and these are just design targets as each CPU is calibrated at the factory making the "delta to Tjmax" the only dead accurate and meaningful reading given by any of the programs.

sorry if this topic has been beaten to death as i'm sure it's been widely debated, but is there a general consensus on what is the best / most accurate utility to monitor temps of CPU, GPU, etc...

did you calibrate Real Temp the way they suggest?
No, I did not have to calibrate it for my E8400.
Its normally just a heads up if one temps go too high. I checked a few times, now I just forget about using the temp program unless something goes wrong such as the system turning off which is an indicator that the cpu has over heated and powering down to protect itself.

Real Temp doesn't support AMD CPUs as far as I know.Real Temp with AMD Phenom II x4 940BE, shows cpu is not supported, I wonder if its because its new or a intel thing.
