Is it just me, or are $200+ motherboards now the norm?

When Core Duo came out, i remember there were a few sub $200, even sub $100 mobos.
So is this just the trend of high quality capacitors and volt regulators? or hype and profit?

Well i7 is high end so there is a premium. I do think that Intel is milking the segment though. Once the i5 range comes out we should see reasonably priced mb's for the arch.

People pay for top of the line shit. My board was 200$ when it came out, motherf technology sucks.

Of course, the i7/i5 is a little different since they are completely different sockets which is different than normal for Intel.

i7 is definitely supposed to be the high end part, thus you have high end prices. Strange that you wouldn't see the i5 parts for over 6 months after the release of the high end parts, but I guess with all the Core 2 variations out there, i5 might be lost in the shuffle or it would perform too close to the i7 to get people to shell out for that.

I have no problem with the premium. Core Duo had its share of $300 mobos at launch time. But they also had cheaper ones, no frills, but workable ones.

but its a far cry from having the cheapest start at $200 and the sky seems to be the limit. (EVGA coming out with a $450 mobo? what next!?)

We need a $1,000 motherboard to match the $1,000 CPUs and a diamond encrusted tower case to match.

TWO $450 mainboards, one with NF200 and one without!!!!:eek::eek:

Core i7 motherboards are already below 200 bucks and falling weekly. Zotac has one for under 170 now. Gigabyte has the UD3R that can be found for around 180-190 in many places with MIR. In another 2 months, we'll see sub 150 dollars for the Zotac board most likely. DDR3 prices have PLUMMETED over the last 2 months. 6Gb of 1066 for 75 bucks, 1333mhz will only set you back 90 or so.

Right now:
Core i7 920 $290-ish
Zotac X58 $170
6Gb DDR3 1066 $75

I'd say that's pretty darned reasonable for cutting edge technology.

Definitely getting better all the time ;). Once it gets around $500 for CPU/Mobo/RAM, I'll probably pick up i7.

If I did, I would have grabbed one of those $230 920's by now :D.

That's what -- $535? CHEAP! Consider what you paid for your 939 x2 rig not so long ago. I was looking at some old newegg invoices and just shuttering at what I coughed up for a system that is not 10% what we have today This was not even close to cutting edge back in Nov of 2005:

G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 500 (PC 4000) $233.00
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Manchester 2.2GHz Socket 939 89W $400.00
ASUS A32N SLI Deluxe bought it on release week for about $300

$933 kids......... friggen eh!

Add my pair of 7800 GTs @ $638 , crappy PSU for $100 and $250 for a couple of Hitachi Deathstars and you had nearly $2000 in a system. What could you build with that today?

I'd only need 3/4 of that to build a wicked badass gaming rig for 19x12 or below gaming.

A system powerful enough to fly itself all the way to Jupiter probably

Even at pretty much full price my X58 system wasn't too pricey......
X58 SLI.......300
i7920...........260
Dominator 1600 6GB.....195
The rest of the stuff I already had.

I got the eVGA/Aeneon 6GB combo from NCIX for $340 AR and a Microcenter 920. $570 really isn't that bad. The X2 6000+/AN9 32x/2GB DDR/8600GT I bought about a year and a half ago was $574. That was my AGP to PCIe upgrade, so the new video card was required. I also feel that my new i7 system is more top of the line now than my X2 was back then.

I also managed to get in on the mWave GTX280 -> GTX285 substitution, so I got that for another $260. I'm happy with what I ended up with for the price I paid. =)

even at day 1 i7/x58/ddr3 was cheaper than c2d/975/ddr2 or x2/nf2/ddr. but with c2d there were options, like cheaper 965 and 945 boards, also with x2 (or amd64) there were via, ati and amd chipsets that were somewhat cheaper at launch. this is pretty much the first release of a new arch where you have absolutely no option on chipset, even months into it.

I got my EVGA x58 for $230.99 CDN from NCIX along with G-Skill 6GB DDR3-1600 for $135.00. I won a core i7 965 from the Intel Core i7 contest but Intel France screwed up and sent all winners a 920 instead  I complained to Intel USA HQ and it looks like they're going to step in and make things right.

So in the meantime I can't start my build until they decide whether I''ll need to return the 920 once they send the 965. I'm hoping they let me keep both :)

I'm more concerned with DDR3 prices. I don't mind paying $200 for a good main board but I do have a problem with the required memory pricing.

my socket 478 abit ic7 g was 225.00 when it came out way back when. ive also never had a problem with it. i think even newer boards are a bit over priced. i mean almost 300 to 400 bucks is a bit much. i think 225.00 to 250.00 is reasonable for a new board.

the other day there was a 6gb ddr3 1600 kit on newegg for 67 dollars, and theres plenty for around 100 bux, its not that bad anymore

I haven't looked for a while, glad to hear it's coming down to a reasonable level. :)

Side note. Do all DDR3 sticks have the built in digital temperature sensor? If so, does software read from it or just the bios?

Huh? First time I've ever heard of that.....

This is a good point. Plus the rest of the hardware, especially hard drives, is a lot lower now for more GB than it was back then. And my WD and Seagate 640GB drives along with my 22x optical drives will plug right in with zero worries on a new i7 system. PSU will usually still work fine, too.

Overclocking wise is the P6T deluxe worth the premium over the normal P6T? I notice newegg has the regular P6T for $240 right now for St. Patty's Day.

How about this for ram?

Overclocking wise there's little difference between the vanilla of a model and the deluxe version usually. The big difference is feature numbers. Like 8 instead of 6 SATA ports, 10 instead of 8 USB ports, 2 instead of 1 LAN port, etc. Also, on X58, the vanilla of a model will often only have 2 physical x16 slots while the deluxe will often have a third x16 slot wired as an x8 or x16 lane slot.
