Core 2 Duo voltage higher under load?

Does this processor (E6600) have some feature that lowers its voltage when it's not under load? Mine's reporting 1.16v idle and 1.26v load. I've turned off anything in the bios to do with "SpeedStep".
 
While I go double check the intel specs for that processor (afaik it should only throttle down under heavy load) What/where is reporting those voltages ? Whats your motherboard ?

The cpu transmits a code to tell the motherboard what voltage to run at, what I haveing found yet is what and how the default voltage code is determined (other than the thermal stuff which makes sense but I did not think it affected idle/low temps.) I might never find out, but you have me interested now.

a) whatever is reporting those voltages is wrong
b) you got a really good core and it does not require higher voltages to work and it was programmed in that way at the factory
c) something else is going on.

Do you have cpuid ? On my machine cpuID is reporting a voltage of 1.312 V which way below the value I have set in my bios and just surfing the web is almost idle for this machine. Interesting. And I see it change occasionally. I too have ALL the speed step and temp control stuff turned off in the bios but I dont want to get out the multimeter and tear my system apart.

HOLY CRAP !! Started ORTHOS (load 100%), and restarted cpuID and voltage is now reported as 1.296V :eek: , less than what was reported at idle and way below my bios setting. Dont know where and how cpuID determines that, and I have the latest version, but something screwy here. Should not be that much voltage droop, I would hope, as this board was touted as having a very good processor voltage supply.

Off to google P965 voltage droop.

The fact above along with what is called the dynamic load line in the intel documentaion seems (to me) to indicate that in addition to the heat related EIST and other thermal stuff, that the cpu will, depending on load(more specifically current draw), report differing voltage requirements to the motherboard voltage requlators.

so to answer your question - yes.

Which leads me to wonder just wth we are setting with Vcore in the bios but I am going to go play my game and not worry about it.
 
I have an Asus P5B (plain). I'm using Asus' PC Probe II to read the voltage. CPU-z reports the same voltages as PC Probe: 1.26 under load, 1.16 idle. In the bios I have my vcore set to "Auto". Maybe if I set it to a concrete number it'll stop fluctuating (at least in this strange inverse direction)? Also, it was an honor making your head explode. Thanks for the research.
 
what your seeing is just regular voltage fluctuation eg. I have set my voltage on a 2.72ghz OC w 1.175v and I never actually saw it at that number sometimes it was higher, other times lower.

Well it's just interesting that it always jumps up by a fixed amount when the system is under load. Seems very methodical.

its weird with my e6400 under TAT load the voltage actually goes down from 1.344v idle to 1.312v load.
 
btw, when you set your voltage over 1.45v, CPU-Z reads it as like 1.2v

Or if you're overclocking and have voltage set to Auto it might be set to 1.45-1.5v or even higher! (which reads incorrectly in windows)
 
Bill, I see your sig says you are using a Gigabyte DQ6.

The DQ6 has two BIOS features which may be conspiring to increase your volts. The first is setting the system voltage to "auto" which allows the board to increase voltage based upon what it "thinks" you need for overclock. On my e6600 @ 3200 going to auto sets the vCore at 1.45 for example. The other feature is the CIA2 option which, I believe, lets the BIOS dynamically alter the system voltage parameters based upon CPU load. If you have either of these options enabled, they may be the reason you are seeing a changing volt spread on the vCore. Just a thought...
 
Thanks, I have it locked in the bios at what my sig says.

I have discovered that cpuID reads the smsbus sensor chip and there is a .ini file for cpuID that will change the "offset" when reading the sensor chip.

After trying all valid offset options it seems the default "0" offset is the correct or at least most agreement with bios.

However it is obvious there is some "slop" in either cpuID or the bios, or the sensor chip but I will be damned if I am going to try to stick a multimeter in there even when I know where to pick the voltages off of, cant afford to blow it up :D

Gonna reinstall the God awfull looking gigabyte software and see what it says and check syssoft sandra as well. I am guessing / hoping the bios setting is correct (minus some droop) and the rest, since they are reading a sensor chip and computing the value, are just a bit off.
