Core 2 Duo may not launch until September

We have heard many suggestions about when Intel will launch its Core 2 Duo processors, but none of the suggested dates seemed to make sense to us. The only time frame that has been officially confirmed by Intel is when it expects to ship to its OEM customers.
LOL. They don't like any date they hear so they just pick one out of thin air.

It's on some random site on teh intarweb, it mustzors be true!

ATI & Nvidia's chipsets may need more time to mature.

But Intel's 975 has been available for months and only needed a VRM update.
Then I'm sure Intel's 965 has been in the works and tested for months already.

Plus Conroe is FSB/socket compatible with all of the other dual core/processor supporting chipsets. IE: 865, 875, 945, 955, 975 all they need is a VRM (board revision) and BIOS update to make them work. Who knows someone might even release a budget 865 motherboard that takes DDR/AGP for someone with an aging P4, but low budget.

The original first leaks of Conroe benchmarks over a month ago were on a Dell motherboard (with no overclocking options). So I'm sure Dell has had plenty of time to test out their designs.

They think just b/c they didn't get their hands on Conroe samples yet that noone else has.

I read somewhere that they said the board makers will retro fit those boards to support Conroe too. They've updated many of the i975s but too many older boards are still in the system. Many VARs are not wanting to play fair and are selling folks non Conroe boards and then demanding restocking fees, sleeaaaazzzy.

Fugger, Victor Wang and Coolater seem to think the ATI boards are ready now.

Sure hope these boards don't run into those old first-rev bugs, like the older boards used to.

Haven't heard much recently about new first gen boards having massive issues though...hopefully it'll hold true till then.

Could be true ! I have heard from reliable sources in the forums that Conroe may not launch till Dec. Oh well.

Poncho this question is for you. I heard the new ATI chipset will do 1T . Well conroe run at 1T???.

Quote:

Intel continues to bang the drum for Woodcrest. It claimed that a two way Woodcrest/Bensley combination called "Junior" beat up a four way AMD Opteron four way machine called "Shredder".

Unquote.

Two way? Four way? Junior? Shredder?

Ok what is the best Conroe motherboard available right now. I mean in terms of overclocking it, i am planning to buy a Motherboard right now with 805D processor until Conroe comes out.

Can some one please explain about the memories also, which ones are best. Like PC800 right?

Do you want to pass that crack pipe you're smoking!! LOL @ Dec.

I will bet you $75,000 that it launches SEVERAL MONTHS before Dec.
IE: July/Aug.

The problem is, there is a difference between LAUNCH, and AVAILABILITY.
The pricesheets list the chips as coming availible July 23.

HOWEVER, if Dell/Compaq/Gateway/Yo momma buy up every chip availible to use in their machines, we the DIY'ers get stuck having to wait until there are chips availible to be sold to us. Those companies Most Favored Buyer (or whatever it's called) status works against us.

Needless to say, we COULD get the short end of the stick, if Intel doesn't try and do right by us (make a huge surplus, release it to the big companies to let them go ahead and build their machines, then come July 23, release the chip for sale to us via the 'egg and ZZF).

Just MY $0.03 (adjusted for inflation).

Chris my post was sarcastic.

Yeah, but he was saying "not launched until Dec." - which I think he was smoking crack.

I'll admit that they MIGHT be in limited supply in the retail market for just the CPU's. I fully expect Dell, HP, etc will suck up a lot of the supply.

Unfortunately, us DIY'rs & OC'rs are a small portion of the overall market, and there could be a price premium initially b/c of short supply on the retail side.

edit: this post was already typed before I saw your "it was sarcasm". :)

Oh, in that case.... "OMFG you newb, I heard AMD is going to totally pwn Intel b/c Core2 is going to be delayed until like Dec. 2008!! " LOL

The problem with the conroe launch isn't going to be on retail availability. It is what Conroe will be available at launch.

The 6800Xe is going to be available at launch and in retail at the time of launch. Problem is its a $1000 dollar cpu.

The 6600 now I won't say that it will be available in retail at launch. But lets all hope so.
Dell isn't going to buy up all the 6800xe at launch thats for sure. But the 6600 thats another story lets just hope intel is fabbing these things at production scale for the last month . If so many should be around at launch.

I'm sure Conroe will make it's July 23rd launch date. The article even seems to confirm this date. The only thing that this article brings into question is what will happen on this date.

Is July 32rd going to be a "launch" for the Conroe like the AM2 launch with CPUs, systems, and MBs available from retailers on launch day? Or, is the July 23rd date the day that Intel will start shipping Conroe to OEMs and retailers? There is about a month difference between the two...

July 23rd isn't too far off, and if we don't receive news that Intel has started shipping Conroes in the next couple of weeks, I think it pretty much confirms that July 23rd is when Conroes will start shipping from Intel, and not the date when parts will be available to consumers.

Yet, the few hundred thousand for this market isn't going to make a difference to any of the OEMs and that's where the problems pop up. Intel screwed up and overlooked this market once before, I don't think they'll do it again.

We will see Conroes for sale at ZZF and the Egg by July 23rd=P

That's the problem though, these OEMs are getting shipments right now. Just like some of them had Woodcrest last month. DO you really think SGI just now figured out that they're going to drop Opteron and use Woodcrest in the last couple of days?

ROTFLMFAO!

I'm not too worried about a supply shortage in the short-term. The OEMs are already receiving Conroe chips, so its not as though the flood gates will be opened on the 23rd, and it will be every man for himself in a desperate bid to aquire the few new chips available. That kind of thing generates terrible publicity, and could end up being illegal under state price gouging regulations. Granted, the OEM's of the world will eat up a fair share of the total CPU supply, but that is ALWAYS true. Last week, of the x thousand Pentium D processors Intel shipped, Dell likely got 500. Did we see any price shockwaves in the consumer marketplace? Of course not. Consumer demand for processors and computer hardware in general is low enough that competition from major manufacturer's for a limited CPU supply is not a problem.

Then give us a link to prove it. I dont doubt you, but like others have said, I havent heard anything about Intel beginning shipments yet either.

The reason why I posted this link to begin with was becouse it brings up a valid question.

Intel To Ship Next MP Processor in 3Q
By Kristen Kenedy, CRN
7:03 PM EDT Fri. Jun. 09, 2006
Intel said Friday it will move up the ship date for Tulsa, its next CPU for multiprocessor servers, to the third quarter.

Dewd, I already gave links to the date of the price cuts and Paul Otellini saying Stock would be for sale on the announcement date.

Other links.

Intel Confirms Conroe Shipping at 2.93GHz For Launch
Late yesterday I was sent an e-mail from Intel letting us know that they have two Extreme Edition Conroe processors coming out this year. The first will be clocked at 2.93GHz and later it will be replaced by a 3.2GHz version. Intel says the Kentsfield is still on track for Q1'07, which is good news for all if Intel can keep that mark.

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=31316

TG Daily

Sources previously indicated that especially Merom may see an October or possibly November launch. Conroe recently was also rumored to be slipping into October. Otellini indicated that Intel is gearing up for mass production of its Core architecture at this time; if Intel will be able to keep its Q3 promise, the company may be shipping Woodcrests, Conroes and Meroms for revenue as early as in June or July of this year.

Hexus

Woodcrest

Intel is getting set to release Woodcrest, a new server processor, on June 26, Skaugen announced Friday. Woodcrest will be a major boost to Intel's server division when it comes to performance, and Intel believes it will retake the lead in this new metric of performance per watt, he said. AMD, however, is unwilling to concede that point just yet, although its competitive marketing no longer cites the pure-performance benchmarks that have carried it through the last two years.

The only thing I see in those links you posted was speculation on the fact that Intel will start shipping in june or july, and that launch is expected in October. The links you provided are even worse then the one I provided.

You guys are great at speculation. The release date is July 23rd. Why can't it be left at that? How the hell do you know there will be low availability. Only time will tell. Sounds like you are trying really hard to find a flaw, or bash Core 2 Duo.

Funny, isn't it? One website says "Conroe may be delayed until Sept", and it's believeable. But hundreds of benchmarks of Conroe are out by many different users, on many different forums, and "they look funny" or "I'll wait until blah blah site reviews it", or "my research says Conroe in Oct".

He won't have to because Conroe will not be available on launch day. Why don't you read the link you think "owned" dubby.

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2006/06/10/conroe_not_late/

We were contacted by an Intel rep who told us, in no uncertain terms, that our story was wrong. Conroe is still on course to ship at the end of July.
Sorry guys, but if Conroe ships at the end of July, you will not see them until August.

Better shut up instead of distorting information : not the Bit-tech link "owned" dubby , who gives a F about bit-tech ?! Intel itself intervened and issued a response to bit-tech's false rumors. Intel owned dubby by issuing a statement which sends his predictions where they should be : trash bin .

Secondly you simply distort what the link says : Conroe ships in July = Conroe will be launched in July.Based on Intel's track record I expect Conroe to be available en masse the day it is launched or the day after that.

Besides whether it is available or not is a different matter alltogether , but as a blind man with an agenda you pull stuff out of your bottom.

If I want to get doomsday predictions about Intel I can always visit sharikou's blog , no need to take his place , I thought you're smarter than that.

How can directly quoting an article without changing a single word be considered "distorting information" or "pull[ing] stuff out of [my] bottom."? Simple answer: it can't.

I didn't distort anything. I took a direct quote from an article and I didn't change a single word. The article said "ship". If you don't like it, flame the article, not me. Didn't I say something to that effect at the end of my post? Oh, yeah. I did:

If Conroe starts shipping from Intel's factory to OEMs and retailers on July 23rd, general availability of Conroe for consumers will not come about until August. This is not speculation, this is fact. This is based on simple laws of physics that state that is takes time to move something from one place to another.
