Recieved a Coolmax 550W 140mm single fan power supply from NewEgg. It's dead on arrival. Plug it in and nothing... Sending it back tomorrow RMA. Is it common for PS's to ship dead like this even though it had a quality control sticker on it? Is Coolmax any good? Thanks.

Its general consensus that anything that ends in -max (Enermax being the exception) sucks. Powmax, Coolmax, Raidmax, etc. That particular PSU isn't ATX v2.0 compliant, doesn't come with PFC (a minor thing), and reeks of the "fancy generic PSU".

You would've been much better off with a cheap Antec/Enermax/Fortron. This is a good choice.

alternately it could be overloaded on one of the rails and never manages to send the PWR_OK signal, I wouldnt trust that supply personally

and agree that the Fortron linked above is a good entry level reliable ATX12V v2.0 supply ;)

but you should still run the numbers for your config ;)

I think that Coolmax is made by ATNG, but does anybody know if ATNG is good?

I had a PSU where a transistor or diode wasn't bolted to its heatsink. In a couple of others, some parts were touching that didn't seem that they should have touched, including on the high voltage side, and many PSUs have solder for the cables that looks very sloppy.
