I noticed that SVC started selling them earlier today, so it must be new here in States.

It certainly looks interesting. I'm guessing it's some sort of Gallium compound.
 
I like the disclaimer @ the bottom of FrozenCPU's page...

it's a joke dude... and people are more stupid than you can ever estimate..

i'd like to see systemcooling do a review of it .. sounds cool ... if it's liquid how do you keep it from running all over the place...

Apparently the syringe has a needle on it, hence the warning on FrozenCPU's page.

My gut feeling after reading the review is that I don't really trust the results. He didn't let any of the compounds burn-in for more than a couple hours. But, I also don't expect a miracle from this liquid metal stuff either. It looks neat, though.

There is nothing inherently unsafe about a metal (alloy) that is liquid at room temperature.
 
This would be interesting in a subzero setup, the freezing point is -20c. Could you potentially get a solid bond? I guess a few degrees won't matter much if you're that low anyway though :p
 
I guess I always assumed the heat spreaders on pentium's and such were aluminum.....what are they made of?

Dunno if you've ever seen more than one processor/heatspreader but they're different colors. Black, brown, silver, some shiny, some dull...

Dunno if you've ever seen the Statue of Liberty but it's copper. It's green.

I say copper.

They are zinc plated copper. You should lapp one sometime.

I would think that the expansion and crystallization of the liquid metal would be a bad thing. Then again, I'm far from an expert.

When metal gets colder, it gets smaller. It doesn't work like ice. Of course, when it gets warm again...

That review mentions that it is supposed to solidify after being burned-in for awhile. I'm imagining it cures rather like the pastes we are used to.

Thank you, I was suspecting either zinc or nickel after the suggestion that they were copper. But google wasn't turning anything up.

Elemental gallium expands and crystallizes when it freezes. I'm guessing that this compound does the same. Though multiple sources mention that gallium has a tendency to supercool...

I wonder if Coollaboratory would make the Material Safety Data Sheet available so we can have a better idea of what the compound is.

The thing is, the liquid metal won't cure at all. It's just that - a liquid. It's like putting vegetable oil on your processor, and then waiting for it to cure. It simply won't.
 
If it's so great why did they not use it in heatsinks like they were going to?

I'm raising the BS flag due to lack of proof.

Why would you? Liquid metal inside of a heatsink is no better then a solid heatsink. Not to mention the cost.

They should supply one, assuming they have one... not that it will necessarily tell you the composition, or even included elements, of the compound.
 
Just inject yourself with it and see what happens.

Im sticking with AS5. This stuff sounds way unsafe!

I read a while ago, don't remember where, and they had a few reviews and the stuff did very well, more than 2deg... however the heatsink and the mess was... ugh.

You would probably also die if you injected youself with AS5....

The one site likely says non-toxic because it probably isn't. It may not do anything with contact to skin. Doesn't mean it's ok to inject it though.....
 
Kinda expensive for not a whole lot better cooling..They claim 8x heat transfer of AS5 but only a 2c difference..Ill pass and stick with my AS5.

Yah, I'm going to avoid water too... the risk of drowning or getting prune-fingers is too much for me to worry about.
Seriously, what potential problems are there? It doesn't seem that difficult or dangerous to me.

true, but other than the "cool factor" of using liquid metal and the lighter wallet, I don't see any benefits over ceramique and AS5 either.

Kinda bums me out though that it isn't "THE BEST COOLING EVER!" because it looks so damn awesome...
 
I just got some and it hasnt cured yet but after an hour of prime 2 instances of prime im loading about 5C cooler than I did with ceramique. Thats not too bad... Im afraid to turn my computer upright in fear of it dripping off lol. I didnt use much, in fact the first time I applied it I didnt use enough to be totally honest. I shut down reapplied and its been working great... Idle temps were about 3C better as well. Im pretty impressed so far but yeah I was afraid when I was applying it I wont lie ;)
 
Im still wondering if there are any long term issues to worry about. My other concern was if any of it ran onto the LGA brace that holds the CPU in the socket as to whether or not that was aluminum. Anyways so far so good, I still haven't turned my system upright due to waiting for it to cure a little, and my fear of it oozing out even though I used a minimal amount. It really does do a great job, even in comparison to ceramique ive seen 3 - 5C changes between Idle and load temps. It also seems the CPU cools off faster after going idle from a heavy load temp. Pretty impressive so far... Wonder if it'll wear on the heat spreader over time? After 24 hours of my original application I removed the heatsink to see if it caused any damage and all looked fine. This stuff is difficult to clean off though.
 
I just might have to get some of this if I ever get the money to build another computer.

Based on how it reacts to aluminum, I'd have to guess that it is some kind of mercury compound. Mercury eats through aluminumoxide, and aluminum oxidizes quickly in air. The result is destructive.
