Cooling problem, suggestions?

Ok, ill give a bit of background. I have a mid range pc and wanted to make sure my cpu temps are within the range of what they should be.
Im using cpuid/realtemp/prime95 along with bios options and having some very high numbers and it worries me.

The first time around, after a couple months my v10 crapped out, so had to get a new one. Thought this was the problem first time around, yet this is number two.

Asus p6td deluxe
i7 920 d0
cm v10
HAF932 case
ambient temp is 22-24c

have tested 2 different pastes, first time being the standard cm that came with v10 and second time was arctic mx-3. (suggestions on paste to use next?)

On stock speed:
im getting idle of low 40's with less than 2% cpu load.
full load, im hitting 80, so? and this is right away.
Im thinking poor contact? some core temps are 73 while others are 80.

I can push it just over 3ghz but temps get high 80's almost 90.
With 3.2 over 90 and then i shutdown the prime so it doesnt go higher.
So i cant see this running 4ghz with temps.

Also im getting pretty sick of this v10 thing b/c of the horrible mounting and poor performance. Maybe its time to just sell it and get something else. I have read some reviews... http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.p...k=view&id=544&Itemid=62&limit=1&limitstart=13

Im not concerned with price but don't want to do water cooling. Suggestions?
ProlimaTech Megahalems maybe? or is there something better. What about fans to use (push pull?)? best on market are? yate loon or something else?

Any help with my problem would be appreciated. (and im prob gonna post in the hardware forum, but im thinking of going ssd and replace my raid wd blacks and want to get ocz but cant figure what to get).
 
What are your cpu fan control settings in the bios. If you have EIST or legacy fan control (voltage) the computer is adjusting the fan speed and sacrificing cpu temp to reduce fan speed/noise.

Turn cpu fan speed controll off (check your manual) to force the fan to run at 100%.

Reviewer had good results. Much better than yours.

So my guesses are.
1) Fan speed is reduced too much by motherboard cpu temp vs. fan speed software.
2) Its a direct heatpipe contact cooler and your core temps vary, time to check the flatness of the cpu IHS and lapp if needed (read: lapp it anyway). Also find online recommendations for application of TIM paste on these direct contact coolers, it is different that flat base coolers and I would also check ithe heatsink base for flatness. You are very limited in fixing any uneven HS surface because you are sanding on the pipes directly but if its way off a very very minor lapping touch up to take some of the worst of it out would be something I would do (but I am insane, keep that in mind) and if its base material "poking" out preventing the heatpipes from making good contact a lapp will fix that and not endanger the heatpipes if you watch what you are doing. Lapping that HS properly will be a chore just looking it seems a long thin pane of glass would be needed.

Yes, your temps seem high and its either bad contact or paste appliaction or both or HS has bad pipes. hmm wonder if at full load you could touch each pipe close to the base and see if they are all about the same warmth, even unplug the fan a few minutes so they really have to work (should easily get warm enough to see if a pipe is much less warm than the others). Check the basics first.
 
I just had something similar when I swapped out some memory, good temps before and then horrible temps. Redid the thermal paste and was all good again, must have disturbed the heatsink somehow when replacing the memory.

So yank the HSF and redo the paste, check out the contact pattern before you button it up too. You may find something.
 
played with bios settings all day yesterday with no luck.I can only assume contact is poor. Yet i can see the previous spread on the last cooler and its not great but not horrible (and suffered same problems). Every review i read about this cooler has temps alot better than mine, with examples of people hitting 4 with lower temps from what im can get just above stock. So im confused.

So my other solution is to junk this cooler and go for something else. But i really need help with that. I know its debatable but what would be the top 3 air cool setups? Is the review i listed above accurate?

Is water cooling that much better? and how reliable is water cooling?
 
Water cooling is better, but it brings a lot of additional cost and complication too. A lot of people are having decent success from the Corsair H50 units with push/pull fans. It is a self-contained liquid cooling system so that you do not have to mess with pumps, radiators, tubing, fittings, etc... They work about as good as some of the top air cooling solutions, put a lot less stress on the MB (Carrying the weight of a heavy air cooler) are reasonably inexpensive and are simple to install.
