Cooling i5 in X-QPack

Built a system for a mate last month thats in need of better cpu cooling. In the case is a i5 750 with stock cooling and a Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H. The motherboard places the cpu socket more towards the direction of the PSU that most motherboards, so regular slim tower coolers don't seem like they'll fit. What options are out there that would fit, offer better cooling than the god awful stock cooler, and allow for some overclocking in this case?
 
Did you already cut out that little bar right above the CPU HSF?

Also are you using the stock PSU that comes with the XQPack?
 
Read this thread for some good ideas. I have placed a Thermalright HR-01 and a Xigmatech S1283 in the two Microfly/X-pack/B-Envi projects assembled to date.

I agree with with Danny, you should have ditched the original power supply.
 
Original PSU has long been replaced with a Modular Antec jobbie, however the HSF from the thread linked likely wouldnt work as the cpu socket sits much further back on the gigabyte mobo being used in this instance.

My opinion is still in place regarding a three pipe, 120mm cooler. Looking at the included pictures and recollecting the position of the power supply, I feel it would be a tight fit, but a cooler similar the the HDT-S1283 would work. Perhaps you could make a mock-up to verify the hypothesis.

Have you examined the AXP-140? Modification/reinforcement of the inner power supply support rail should permit this cooler to be installed. A 120mm fan may be required due to slight offset; again, a mock-up is probably in order.

Alternatively, I have been thinking about my third Microfly/X-Pack project this summer. Given the location of the socket on the UD2, a fabricated mount would facilitate placement of a Corsair H50.

Thanks for that link... might be a good choice for his machine. What ideas have you had for mounting an H50 though? That would ultimately be what he wishes he could do in that case, but I cant see any easy way apart from mounting where the optical drives should sit.

Would a H50 fit in that case? the pump/plate piece is pretty small, and you can put the rad wherever you want really long as it gets some air.
 
With the windows replaced with HEXX Mesh, I envisioned brackets attached to the remainder of the right-hand side longitudinal case support that is cut by some (myself included) to facilitate a larger processor heatsink.

With the i5 & i7 sockets sitting further back, there should be enough room for a 25mm fan and the radiator to clear the pump/heatsink assembly while facing the right-hand side.

I agree the mount(s) would not be easy, but such is the nature of case modification.
 
+1 for misan-thrope and the H50...great cooling solution and you can mount the radiator where ever is most appropriate

Would there be enough room to mount the fan against the rad from the H50 against the front of the case under the dvd/hdd cage? I could easily make a crude but suitable bracket out of spare metal and some bolts if it'd fit.

Not without removing the 3.5" bay. Even after that, sufficient airflow would be an issue.

Mounting on the side would be the easiest.
 
It is certainly possible in this configuration if the hoses were placed toward the top of the case in lieu of toward the bottom of the case.
