I have the 690 and am absolutely thrilled and perplexed with the number of fans. The front and rear fans are no-brainers of course. However, there are 2 top fans, 2 side fans and 2 bottom fans. Do you run both top to vent out, 2 side in and 2 bottom in? Some other mix and match? It seems that if I vent the bottom in, it'll just suck alot of dust into the case.

I used to run it with 1 side (I have the window) 2 top, 1 rear, 2 front and 1 bottom. I recently reduced it to 2 front, 1 rear and 1 side and the temps are the same. Having all of the fan slots populated doesn't really help, it just makes it noisy.
 
I have 2x140mm on the top (exhaust), 1x140mm on the bottom (intake) and the normal 120mm fans by the front hard drive cage and rear exhaust near the CPU. Side fans will screw up your airflow unless you really need direct cooling on your cards or you want more positive pressure in your case.
 
I run mine with the stock front 120mm intake and rear 120mm exhaust. I added a 120mm exhaust at the top rear. With a Q6600 running @ 3.3 crunching WCG 7x24 the cpu never breaks 50c at full load.

As Antimatter said.. more is not always better when it comes to airflow and cooling.
 
The top and rear should be exhaust, and everything else intake. I run mine with two intakes in the front, two exhausts on top and one exhaust in the back, and it keeps everything nice and cool (I actually have the 590, but the chassis is the same).
 
I'm using one front intake, one rear exhaust and one top-rear exhaust. Works great and keeps everything cool. I could probably drop the top-rear exhaust and be fine but it seems to drop the GPU temps (passively cooled) a few more degrees (C).
 
Strapping a second fan into the front drive bays really helps with two things. First, it greatly increases the airflow that your memory gets, especially if you use a tower-style heatpipe cooler that blows to the rear of the case. If you're overclocking your memory, doing this can negate the need for a dedicated memory cooling fan unit. Second, it gives a straight shot of cold air to your CPU cooler. It's very effective.

For the record, I have as exhausts two top fans and the rear fan. As intakes, I have two front fans and one side fan blowing on my video card. The airflow with this setup is superb.
 
Can anybody give me some tips on how to mount a 2nd fan cleanly in the front? I'm already using the bottom fan bracket so that's out of the question.
 
I popped one of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817993002 in, right now its just a fan, no drives mounted. It looks really good in the 690. Alternatively, I used to have a 120mm fan zip tied to the 3.5" bay adapter bracket. I had the bracket in the second to top 5.25 bay and the fan hanging below it. I wouldn't recommend using a LED fan there though if you are going to do the bracket zip tie route though.

I used zip ties. There are plenty of holes in the drive bays that you can use to thread the ties through.

Hey I almost bought one of those but didn't know if it'd look right. Does it sit pretty flush? I was worried that it'd protrude out of the front. Also how was the install? Does the 690 tooless bays pose any problems?

Could you post a pic?
