I recently read a review for the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus in Maximum PC. It got a 10, outperforming the Thermalright U120-eXtreme. My question is, might it outperform a Corsair H50 watercooling system?

The Cooler Master retails at $30. The H50 is closer to $70. Your opinions? I'm looking to overclock my Core i7-920 to 4Ghz. Which would be the better cooler for this?
 
Well I can certainly tell you that the Hyper 212 does not beat a thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme. So no it won't be beating an H50 since an H50 doesn't really beat a thermalright ultra 120 Extreme by any justified amount.

Do you have a source review for this statement? It was a pretty solid review in the magazine so I am curious.

Disclaimer, I did not delve deeply into the testing methodology and the margin of error in most site reviews is a big question, so take all reviews with a grain of salt. One issue is the fans used in whatever site is testing as the TRUE comes with no fan and so the reviewers choice as to what was used is always a question that only sometimes gets answered. A google of "Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus review" brought 4 up right at the top and from sites that are fairly respectable. Further disclaimer, I have never used any of the large tower coolers as I cannot/willnot ship a machine with one installed. If an Artic Freezer will not get me where I want go with cpu frequency I water cool it.

It seems a decent cooler for the money with the most common comment by the reviewer being that if one is not interested in springing for the extra ~ $20 for a TRUE its a good value as the price/performance is excellent.

However after a quick scan of the reviews I have to agree, its nowhere close to a TRUE when tested under load in a OCed situation.

I water cool so I am no fan of either, in my mind it boils down to how much you (or even if) you overclock. Mild or moderate OC the coolermaster is an opportunity to save a few bucks. On the other hand if you run your machine as hard as you can, the TRUE would be the preferred solution and a no-brainer (based on my reading of almost every post made and the reported results by our members). Its kinda like the old IBM rule, "no one ever got fired (cant go wrong) by buying IBM (TRUE).

My opinions are worth exactly what you paid for them :D
 
Like I said i would go with Kyle's advice. If the airflow in your case sucks, get the H50. If the airflow is good like its supposed to be, get the True. Nough said.
 
Case is a Corsair 800D. Airflow should be fine. The TRUE it is.
 
I'm a big advocate of MaximumPC, I read them every day. I love reading their reviews because they give some really good pros and cons that I don't think you could find other places. As for there heatsink reviews... I don't trust them too much... The just seem to go against the grain, and not agree with other websites for the best choice. I'm sure the Hyper 212+ will perform great, and even comperable to a TRUE (I'm a Prolimatech man myself). From a price/performance stand point, the Hyper 212+ is the pick all the way. You can pay twice as much for a TRUE or a Proli, but you won't get twice the performance gains. Depending on your chip, you may or may not be able to get to 4ghz with either cooler.

If I were you... I would buy the Hyper 212+ now, and save my money for a real water cooling setup so that overclocking to 4ghz will be a breeze. The Obsidian 800D is perfectly designed for water cooling.
 
My recommendation is get a Mugen 2 if you can fit it.
It beats a stock TRUE and it the price/performance is great. It is big though.
Maximum PC heatsink reviews are very poor...never go by them please.
If you want the best the Noctua NH-D14 or Megahalems in that order. The H50 I tried and it did beat the Mugen 2 but you have to be able to use the rear fan as intake to get the most out of it. It is not a problem on my HAF932 but just wanted to let you know.
