Good morning, would the above mentioned PSU be enough to power 3 GTX980s? I'm asking because I'm trying to fix my brothers computer for him and it's looking like the PSU is the culprit. He was running 3 GTX680s without a problem and he upgraded to the 980 and the computer gets stuck in a boot loop with the 3 cards installed. It will boot to the splash screen and then reboot over and over. It will boot no problem with 2 cards but not when I add the third. All cards work fine individually. I'll list specs below.

i7 5930k
EVGA X79 Classified
Corsair Dominator Platinum 32GB DDR3
Cooler Master Silent Pro 1500W PSU
3X EVGA 980 4GB

-Well, one thing is for sure.
That's not a problem related to the wattage capacity of the PSU. 1500 watt are more than enough to run 3 980s.

-Each 980 consumes 200 watt Maximum, so 3*200= 600watt max power consumption.
I saw that this PSU has 3 sockets for pci-e cables ( http://www.modders-inc.com/cooler-master-m2-silent-pro-1500-w-power-supply/3/ ). Have you tried to connect each gpu to a different socket ? ( *on the PSU side i mean). If yes, then also try some other combinations and watch the results, maybe some pci-e cables weren't put tightly into the sockets ;)

He made all the connections on the PSU side but I will take a look at that today when I go over there. Thanks for the reply, I appreciate that!

Okay, tried a bunch of different configurations to no avail. Not sure what else to try, I might bring my PSU over and try that.

Yes, good idea.;)
If it works with your PSU, and since you said that each card works when connected individually, then, in my opinion there are 2 scenarios:
1) There something wrong with the tripple SLI bridges (*although can't be sure since i always use single GPU), or
2) The PSU has some problem (*although i don't think it's very likely, since you said that the triple SLI with 680s works without problem,- have you put them back again to double check?- ).

EDIT: Well, if it works with your PSU, ignore my 1) comment. Obviously there will be nothing wrong with SLI bridges, my mistake !! :D

This isn't a PSU rail distribution issue. If it were, the unit would shut down.

The Silent Pro M2 is a somewhat mediocre Enhance design, but it's not to blame this time. At boot, it'll be barely loaded at all. I'd look at drivers.

Drivers? But the computer boots without a problem with two cards? I mean I'm willing to try it because we are running out of options. And I know your expertise in power supplies, I've even bought a few from you! :)

could also be some kind of odd compatibility issue with 3 980's in that board....the cards really don't draw much power just from booting up.....its nothing like running furmark at 100% load

Is the motherboard running the latest bios? same question for the cards? Im not expert on 980s but i think the power draw is not much more than the 680's if it even is in fact more. some motherboards have an optional power cord running to the board...are they all hooked up? might try clearing the cmos or looking into the bios make sure the PCI-E Frequency and related stuff is set correctly

in final...if i couldn't figure it out i would just sell one of the cards cause 2 980s alone are very powerful....or maybe sell all 3 and get a titan x......be done with waiting on sli profiles:D best of luck

Yes the board is running the latest Bios, I actually had to update it when he got the 680s. I also tried clearing the cmos and checked all the settings in the bios and everything looks good, the thing just hates 3 cards!!
He's running 3 monitors and does a lot of gaming so that's why he's trying to run the 3 cards. But I agree with you, I would have gone the titan route myself, but he bought the 3 cards at different times so it wasn't just one purchase. Thanks for the reply, I'll post a solution if we ever find one. :D
