A kick ass mod idea as just entered my twisted mind.......... Operation Acrylic Monitor Casing :D

I mean a total Fabrication of a new monitor casing with cool on and off button and such
Probably Smoked Black Acrylic with Probably a gunmetal grey or possibly black front monitor casing. probably use the stock one for this, but change the on/off switch. probably fabricate one and cut it to match the old 1 but probably acrylic smoked black to match the sides and top of the monitor casing.

just to visualize better, ur gonna make one of those mac computer/monitor thingies? they way how you can see through it?

Yeah, so kickass that it could literally kick your ass if you touched the wrong thing in your CRT. Are you familiar with the dangers of working around CRT equipment? If not, it's time to get familiar with Repair FAQ:

http://repairfaq.ece.drexel.edu/sam/crtfaq.htm#crtcsa

That said, a very similar thing has been done, here in our very own [H]ard|Forum. It was done by member GhettoRaid, several years back. If you can provide me with an picture host, I'll post a few shots I've saved.

It's a very good thing to have all that sheilding around the monitor. You probably don't want to change that.

Scrap this one while you still have only 2 arms.

I've heard of ppl touching the capacitors in a CRT and being shocked across a room. It can even cause death and severe bodily harm.

I'd pass on this one.

I think Pheaton did a mod similar to this and cast it out of resin - Ice Cube looking thing.

so how many of the capasitors and wires are always alive with power even when the monitor is unplugged?

Ahh stop being sissys! Or would that be sissies? ;) Anywho just discarge the monitor and you'll be fine long as your not being totally dumb and try to discharge it while it's plugged in. Pretty simple my dad's been doing it for years working on TVs and monitors and I've done it a few times.

here's a link that describes how to do it. Since your playing with a bunch of volts there be careful and don't come yelling at me if you get a jolt.

oh yea and read xonik's link above lots of good info there as well

WOW WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA.............

qft.

you can just leave the monitor unpluged for 2 days...

the caps should be discharged by then... but you can discharged them manually just for the safe side...

i've read one article where one can discharge by wired a screw driver with PLASTIC handle to the earth on the wall plug and touch one of the power supply... don't ask me, i read it decades ago...

also when you removed the CRT... make sure it's properly stored and protected from other metal objects or other magnetic meterial

Some capacitors in CRT equipment can hold their charge for months...

Actually, this should be the only option you should entertain.

That's not safe at all. The charge stored can and does melt screwdrivers. Also, the extremely rapid discharge can cause the capacitor to explode.

The correct way is to use a heavy duty resistor in the megohm range, one that can withstand several dozen watts.

The unsafe but entertaining way - have your friend use the screwdriver while you stand across the room and watch as he discharges the caps.

LOL

im not exactly sure of what you want to do but i thought of hey, theres acrylic cases, why not acrylic monitors?... but seeing how people say its all dangerous, i would skip on this

however, its not gonna stop me from making a window on my monitor... then my setup is REALLY [H]ard!!!

Those translators don't always work great. Better really for individual words or you already have some kind of basis in the language you're translating from.

I'd say if you can do it safely, go for it. Work on it for days and days. Finish it... look at it.... and realize.... maybe a window would've looked better.

I guess you got so confused by all the strange words used in there that you missed the big line that said "Translate into english (by Google)"
where does it say that?

no no nonono
you got it all wrong adding a window would not be what i would be doing, i would be completly fabricating a completly new monitor casing and painting the front monitor casing

and qt i would want an acrylic cased monitor so poop on you :p it would look pimp at lan parties expecialy after id be done with it, the whole monitor casing would not be acrylic just the top back and sides, in a smoked black acrylic, possibly with a airbrushed flame job or something. the monitor casing would match the original casing in size and shape, and not look like a dumb big box with a monitor screen.
about discharging the capasitors, i have a few ideas in mind including the old hey check out the cool light show! zap there i go no more xero :( lolz but yah being sereous i wouldnt really even need to touch the capasitors, since id put the casing on a grounded welding table with a mat so it wont get scatched or dammaged. i may do a green sand mold for the casing and do a split pattern mold in possibly aluminum or something. but if i was using aluminum for the caseing id probably use a high density plastic on the inside to ground the outsides of the case so it wouldnt discharge when you touch it. or even fiber glass or something, ceremic would work too, as would wood. even if i didnt mold it i could just tig weld aluminum, sandblast it and polish it to a mirror finish, and possibly add some cool tinted blue windows, just for style and kicks :D

i know what you wanted, a monitor casing where the plastic is tranparent acrylic

but i said monitor window cus it was my idea but i guess you confused that... or were you talking to me?

not really talking to you in general, but talking to the nay sayers :p nay sayers are poopy and deserve to be shot, you never do know what you can do until you try something.
