Watercool them. Found out the hard way that if you want 2x250W cards and silence that is the way to go. Also to the OP, go for SLI if you've got money and neurons to burn :p.

If you don't want to bother with a full water loop like me, you can buy AiO 120mm hybrid coolers separately from evga (prob the easiest DiY) or you can buy something like a corsair H90 140mm AiO cooler (or H55, or the nzxt versions), nzxt kraken G10 brackets for around $35 each, and some M2.5 25mm screws + a copper shim. It adds to the cost considerably though, per card... and that's not even counting if you replace the stock fans with two hydro-dynamic bearing ones on each radiator for push/pull. You could also just wait on the (120mm) hybrid version of the card of course which are typically $120 or more than the stock card.

I'm waiting on the SC ACX or ICX model because it has higher stock boost clocks and more importantly because they have a mid plate which acts as a heat sink and protective layer covering the vram and everything else other than the gpu. The mid plate/cover works better for taking off the stock hsf and installing AiO cooling, without having to mess with gluing on after market mini heat sinks to the vrms (which could fall off over time depending on how well adhered vs heat, incidentally). I already have bags of extra screws, shims, vinyl washers from the first time I did this, and I have two spare nzxt g10 brackets and can re-use my 140mm Cougar CFV14HB fans so I'm all set on those misc parts.

This is how I did it on my two 780ti sc 's with 140mm corsair H90 coolers (two Cougar CFV14HB hydro bearing fans push/pull on each radiator not pictured). Swapped out the stock bracket vrm fans with ARCTIC F9 PWM Rev. 2 Fluid Dynamic Bearing, 92mm PWM fans too ..

So, now people can actually vote in this poll. I am still not sure if I should SLi or not.
Not having AIB cards have made the decision easier thus far but in the future when AIB cards are out, I will be asking myself this question again.

Knowing that some newer games are supporting it is good (e.g., Mass Effect Andromeda).

There is a difference between whether SLI performance is worthwhile and viable,
and whether a particular person's parameters make sli a good choice for them.
I have a feeling a poll might not differentiate with the nuances.

To name a few considerations.. budget, existing rig, upgrade path, monitor resolution, demand high hz gameplay/aesthetics?, ok with dialing down settings (how much?) - to get high fps and hz (100+ avg) on a high hz monitor?, favorite types of games and titles, also game library/backlog.

You know my vote on sli itself rather than if it's right for you. That is your own decision.
I'll reiterate here since quotes are space savers.

I go with SLI because I value resolution and image quality over anything else. Frame rate consistency is also something I value. I prefer to "overkill" on hardware and always get the best experience possible. Budget is almost never a concern unless the gains are too small or the cost is utterly insane. I avoided buyin a pair of Pascal Titan X's because I knew 1080Ti's were probably only six months out or so after release. At $1,000 each I might have done it but not at $1,200+.

Have my 1080 Ti's waiting on heatkiller blocks from Germany (no stock anywhere!). I have 2 980 Ti's in my rig now and 1 1080 Ti would be a downgrade so I got two. Will upgrade CPU and mobo at Skylake-X then I'm good to go for several years.

Also, I am currently playing Mass Effect Andromeda at 4k DSR max settings and it is glorious (minus some bad optimization on the game end). Anything lower and the game is just full of jaggies, even with the ingame AA solutions. FPS is 60+ most of the time.

Yeah sure.. Until Volta comes out at least! :D I'm almost your exact same scenario..... Have been waiting for a long time running my 980 Ti's in my 3770K rig. Decided to wait hopefilly for Skylake in August.... I will upgrade to the EVGA FTW3's when they launch hopefully next month as well.... We shall see.....

I love technology and bleeding edge....Just sucks that I don't game as much as I used to now with little kids....But I can still have the big E-PEEN....

So has anyone NOT found a compelling reason to SLI, after having actually SLI'd 1080ti's? Please answer if you have actually SLId 1080tis and now have found no reason to do so. I have two in my Threadripper but not sure I want to keep it. I am playing with them now.

I've enjoyed it. That said, with support seeming to dwindle, I'm not certain I'll do another SLI setup in the future. Time will tell.

I guess the metrics are just: 1080p is still the king of most gamers and we that run 3440x1440 and 4k are exotic boutique types. SlI must be a drain on developers to support. I assumed with the push to higher res displays it would renew the need to focus on sli.

Of course I'm running 3440 which isn't 4k but is much higher than normal 1440p so I assumed maybe a benefit would be seen. I have a few weeks left to see if I want to keep the extra card before my return window closes.

I'm running dual Asus Poseidon 1080tis. 1 on water and the 2nd I'm Just got on air u too I'm sure I want it.

I played quite a bit of bf1 yesterday on that new snow map. Every time I play that game at 90-110ish fps and it's buttery fucking smooth I remember why I love my SLI setup so much. At 4k and having that much fps to spare maxed out is a thing of beauty and a joy as a PC gamer to behold. Anyone gaming at this res needs SLI at this point there is no choice. Maybe next gen Volta you don't have to but for now I wouldn't have it any other way.

I agree, especially to get nearer to the full benefits of high hz monitors ... http://i.imgur.com/ALY9lQS.png

Especially at high resolutions and the fact that the fps measured by a meter is not the real frame rate you are getting but rather an average taken from rates all over the place on a +/- roller coaster. The graph I linked shows an example of a 108fps-hz average graph that swings from 70fps-hz to 140fps-hz most of the time (with a few 55fps potholes and 160fps spikes).

There will be higher hz 4k in the future of course so that will come into play for more people stuck on having 4k rez. The game graphics ceilings are very arbitrary to start with. The dev's challenge is to whittle complexity down to "real time" , not the other way around.
Waiting on a next gen card isn't going to put you in the clear for higher resolutions and high frame rates. Even now people often turn off "over the top" settings to get higher frame rates (hairworks, use lower physx settings, turn off supersampling/downsampling, etc, view distance/view distance details and animations, shadow complexity, etc). Mods can alllow you to go over the arbitrary "ultra" ceilings too.

For a high hz monitor you should really be keeping the frame rate over 100 for the most part which would be an average of at least 130fps-hz. As it is now, on the most demanding games, you often have to make compromises and dial in settings on some games to even get a more reasonable target of 100fps-hz. That means a single card isn't really an option for higher resolutions if you want to get overall very high+ to ultra image/scene and fx detail combined with "very high to ultra" motion clarity and motion definition aesthetics that true modern gaming monitors are capable of.

It depends on the game. Frostbite games benefit from it. At 4K or close to it, I'd keep it but that's just me.

Vulkan/DX12 having no support and it being back in the developers' laps --- I'd probably not get another SLI/Crossfire setup.

I think BF1 on DX11 may be the last hurrah for Multi GPU

Sniper elite 4 has full dx12 sli support I was getting 98% on both GPUs and it runs sweet. So DX12 is just slow to take off maybe?

Vulkan doesnt need SLI. Vulkan can hit 150 fps on a calculator its such an impressive engine.

I would keep it if at least 50% of future titles would use sli. If not the. It's not worth the money from what I can tell.

SLI and crossfire at this point are not very useful anymore. You will continue to see poor support from Nvidia and AMD on drivers, they almost always need a driver update to fix some weird glitch as well. Just not worth the trouble anymore. I would stay with just one card and wait to upgrade when either Volta or Navi are out as they are both likely to play 4k just fine. At worse you just wont be able to max graphic settings and that is far less frustrating then random glitches that you have to wait for a fix on.

DX12 is slow to take off, as is Vulkan, though Vulkan is seeing more support than OpenGL (which it more or less replaces for gaming). Main problem? DX11 is extremely well developed in mainstream engines, and this limits DX12/Vulkan uptake somewhat, on top of DX12/Vulkan needing much more developer involvement than DX11. Main counterpoint: DX12/Vulkan are similar to each other, and they're similar to how console APIs work, so engine developers do have incentives to do said development.

Vulkan will benefit from SLI/Crossfire, and it is not an engine- Vulkan is an API that is utilized by software such as game engines.

Making a determination is personal; saying "SLI/Crossfire is/isn't worth it" as a blanket statement is very silly. There are a multitude of variables involved that should be weighed by those considering using multiple GPUs for gaming.

They're both still extremely useful when well-supported in situations where no single card can provide enough performance. VR and 4k120 (when those monitors become available) are both areas that challenge today's games, and games aren't standing still.

What we see is the increased difficulty of developing DX12/Vulkan codepaths in game engines taking developer resources away from supporting multi-GPU. However, the largest engine houses (which now happen to be the largest publishers outside of Epic) are all working toward patching multi-GPU support into their engine DX12 and Vulkan codepaths.

And due to the reliance on externally developed engines by developers, we're likely to see more and better support for multi-GPU with DX12/Vulkan than we saw with DX11, going forward.

I would also advise to go with one card, but for those seeking to top out graphics settings, I also advise keeping options open. With two cards, at worst you just have to turn off SLI/Crossfire for specific games.

At this point, with the money anyone is going to invest within an SLI /CF setup ESPECIALLY at the top end, the GFX MFR's should support dual card solutions more. I know 'its in the hands of the developer' and all that bullshit... Why are you going to lay down $1300 USD+ for something these companies dont even OFFICIALLY support?

    Its bullshit.

Yes, in my eyes I need 2X1080Ti's as well, I like to game @ 4K and I want a steady, MINIMUM 60 FPS. However im not bowing down to the GFX companies and giving them 1K and they give me crumbs.

In sniper elite 4 as just one example, I play a slideshow when fully at max settings at 34401440, However in SLI It's extremely playable. If only more games were this supportive. I wished titan fall

two had SLI support since that is my main FPS game I play. But from my testing, my oculus Rift is about as smooth as humanly definable in VR titles. Man I'm still thinking it I want two of these monster ASUS Poseidon cards or not.

It's sad developers don't support multi-GPU more. It is extra effort, sure, but many games run on the same engines like Unity or Unreal, and, even with in-house engines, companies typically stick with the core engine for many years over many games. The added cost of supporting mGPU would be once upfront and give dividends for years.

Especially since there are display technologies that pretty much *need* mGPU like 4K Ultra settings (on high-end games), Surround/Eyefinity, 144Hz+, or any combination of those things.

You should definitely SLI. I have dual Titan XP's and it is a great experience. Playing BF1 on max settings at 6K resolution and pegged at 60 fps (monitor refresh rate). Most games are similar. Most people who complain about SLI probably are just going off of articles they have read and not their own personal experience, or at least not recent experience. Most of the past problems like microstutter are not an issue anymore. SLI support does not seem to be dying - I think nvidia limiting games to 2 way SLI was a positive thing because it lets developers, and even nvidia programmers, focus on perfecting 2-way configuration. DX12 provides more options for game developers to implement it as well.

Thats a positive statement for a change. I usually ask for only opinions based on actual experience but its unavoidable to get people that are going to interject with things they have read. It is a natural mechanic of the human being.

I am not that easily convinced due to my age and growing cynicism but I like to ask because some people legitimate information.
