Hey all,

What do you use for this?

My most recent build (running ESXi 5.1) does not have on board video. I forgot about this until building the system, and dug around in my old boxes and found an old 3DFX Voodoo 3 2000 PCI, which I used and currently have installed.

The heatsink on it gets pretty hot though, so I presume it's using more power than I had anticipated.

What do you guys use in these situations, where 3D (or even 2d) performance is not really needed, just text console, and minimum power use is desired?

I was thinking maybe an old as dirt PCI VESA card would do it, like an old 2MB PCI Matrox Millenium or something.

Seeing that those things don't even have heatsinks, they can't use that much power, and ought to be dirt cheap right?

Any thoughts or ideas?
 
ATI Rage II or PCI Riva TNT cards can usually be found in side of the road junkers. I'm using a PCI ELSA Erazor in my ESXi box right now.
 
HAHAHA! The PCI Erazor was my 1st gaming card... Now it's relegated to generic video duty. Honestly, use whatever is the lowest horsepower card you have, and be done.
 
I don't have any video in my ESX hosts. Don't need it once it's installed. So I just hooked up a video card during install, and manage everything through vCenter or SSH as needed.
 
Well, I did some more digging and I found my old Matrox Millennium 2MB card I used to use for 2d back when I had my Voodoo 1...

Works just fine in ESXi :)

(Game port not detected :p )
 
I'm not sure I could tell you what I use in my system. I just ended up finding a PCI card in my "junk" supply". It worked so I left it in.

I had originally hoped to use a more powerful card for pass-thru but.....should have read the ESXi docs a littler further and I would have discovered that ESXi does not yet play well with higher-end video. So it was a waste on that system. Moved it into another system so it did not go to waste.
