if the price /performance ratio is the same as before, then there is nothing jump through hoops for.
AMD is expected to drop prices to the old AMD levels after conroe comes out.
I personally think that AMD has gone a bit off the deep end with its high prices.
it's about time it got back to its roots.
cheap processors with great upgrade paths.

You do know amd never made a dime during your so called good old days don't you?

If Amd goes threw with the price cuts . They will lose money. Not a good thing.

woodcrest is very fast with 2 socket setup. Almost equal to AMD 4 socket setup.

Its going to be a rough road for AMD . Exspecially once Nehalem comes onto the scene Just a few short months After K8L.

So your saying I can buy an AM2 on july 24 for $100. Not likely

reword that So your saying I can buy An AM2 X-2 for $100 dollars on july 24 is that correct.

I don't think that the stockholders like Intel bringing in a new processor at a low price either tryin to undercut AMD, not to good either in a business sense. Thats like sony tryin to sell the PS3 cheaper than a xbox 360, just dosen't make sense when it cost more to make a product than what you'll selling it for. Maybe that's why even with new tech around the corner wallstreet is telling stockholders for intel to abandon ship and their stock plumets along with AMD's.

Hi All,

I see everyone's all steamed up about Conroe.

A couple of questions beg to be asked.

1st Has anyone other than Intel tested these Processors?

2nd Has anyone found out if Intel has solved their heat issues with this generation of processor?

As someone who has both AMD & Intel, when the time comes for a upgrade, I'll go with the best one that I can afford. But i reserve judgement until I can see unbiased & canned test.

I think it is funny actually. There were only a few tests done where there was a clear lead. Ahead of any margins.

Funny becouse all of a sudden Intel *finally* catches up, and all of a sudden they are king. OK....

about conroe being cheaper, supposedly the day after conroe is released AMD will price drop their procs, 3800+ down to like $150. If true, the price/$ should stay pretty damn even. I haven't paid much attention to conroe yet, I might even wait for a discrete graphics 13.3" merom.
(cf): know where I can find a sub $80 s939 chip, avail now? My X2 is leaving and I need a replacement.

I'm going to drop my 3800X2@2.6ghz and run to my local store and purchase a new mobo/ram and CPU when Conroe is released.

Not likely.

For a 15% increase in overall performance, it's not worth it. I'll keep what I have for a year or so and upgrade to what's best then. I'm tired of playing the "epenis" game.

Just my 2 cents...carry on.

Face it man, Intel will soon have the lead.

Who's faster? Intel will be, obviously. Will I not by Intel because of my AMD biased? Probably not. Do I hope AMD's K8L comes back with a strong punch to Conroe? You betcha. But, I'm not too good to buy Intel again. ;) I love my Pentium3 750MHz chip, it was my first ever processor, and the Pentium3's kicked ass (as did my Voodoo5500 AGP). But, as days went by....yeah, Intel lost it and AMD got it. ;) I've been AMD for quite awhile, but it'll be fun to play with Intel again. Chances are good that once I get money again, I'll play with a Cornroll :p but then I'll get a K8L when those drop as well. But, for now, my 2.8GHz @ stock vcore Opteron 165 is doing my plenty good @ the $270 it cost. Plus since AMD will slash prices once Conroe hits, it'll be even more fun to buy new parts (namely, the FX series).

All in all people, Conroe is a good thing. It's keeping AMD on it's toes and lowering prices for everyone. You should rejoice instead of complain. ;) I look foward to Conroe as much as I look foward to Revision G for AMD, as well as K8L (assuming it's not released with G) and Socket F. New stuff is always fun, reguardless of the name brand.

Not even close! Because it the Cheap 4200 and 4400 Intel processors will have 2MB of L2. There will be at least two 1.8/1.83 for the 3800+ (Dual Core, not the single core model) to compete with.

I've already had 3 of my AMD only buddies thank me for getting them to wait for the price cuts. Cuts on motherboards as well BTW. One guy will be able to get his Processor, motherboard, and most of the cost of his 2GB of RAM if the price fall as expected.

I just got a Opteron 165 for $377 >.< and cheapest conroe is like 2xx .... should i sell my cpu as i havent bought the mobo etc yet and wait for Conroe or should i just buy the components for Op165? Also anyone knows about how much faster the cheapest conroe will be to a overclocked Opteron 165 ? say maybe OC @ 2.6-2.8

SO you're dissin' YONAH like that, kind of sucks! Pretending Yonah doesn't kickass is why many folks got caught like a Deer in headlights when Conroe kicked @$$!

Just before I bought my 3500+, I looked at Opteron 165 as well. BUt as that old saying goes, study long- you study wrong. While sparks and I (and two other bud's) were trying to make up our minds, the price jumpped $175 to over $355, sorry. Since Intel wouldn't fully support Pentium-M or Yonah on the desktop, I went AMD 3500+ with Plans for X2 by fall if Conroe doesn't come through.

Still might save parts of this rig and do a bargain basement X2 at the start of the year LOL!
I too hope K8L kicks much ass next year.

lol, I dont think you are aware of the fact that it costs Intel less to make their CPU then it does for AMD!

Yeah, Intel has already moved to 65nm while AMD is still back at 90nm. I think AMD is suppost to release 65nm around December 06 aren't they? But regardless Intel is much larger then AMD and can manufacture processors for less money. In a price war Intel will win. If AMD has to drop prices very much to compete with Intel and Conroe then they will be selling into the red again.

Not to forget, Intel is a much larger company and has lots of money. They can afford some loses, while AMD can't.

I do not really care for brand, but for the past year or so, i have been more into AMD, but before that i was more into intel, whoever has the best price:preformance ratio wins my vote for the most part!

Finally....

It is about time too. I been waiting for Intel to release a competitive product for a few years now. Too long if you ask me.

It's also important to note that it "finally" has caught up, with what a processor released several years ago? Just shows that iNTels engineers are not complete bumbling fools. I'm suprised they didn't catch up sooner.

For an older aging core technology, the AMD 64 was king for quite some time. I'm willing to bet that AMD does have some killer tech, just around the corner that will astound.

In addition, they let Intel garner the "ohhhh" factor now, while this fall shoppers won't necessarily be buying new PC's as they wait for Vista in 2007. AMD can then release at close to that time and with a repeat of the previous CPU history, redominate again.

Of course, this could all be my !!!!!!sm showing :D But I could care less about conroe, I've already spent my money and most likely won't for another year. There'll be something new then and I'll get what's best for me.

those old bumbling fools practically built AMD considering that AMD used intel's architecture to pretty much jump up their company. don't talk shit about intel engineers as they're good enough to work on 65nm, 45nm, and 32nm processing while AMD's engineers can only dream to get their hands on a conroe and use their cheap microscopes to attempt to duplicate the technology.

and yes. Go to www.xtremesystems.org . Go to the intel section of the forum and look at all the guys with Conroe specs. Conroe runs with less power and runs with less heat, which = good

lol. DDR2 which intel has pushed to mature and standardize. For the people who said that the 920, 930 and the PD 805 are slower are right... to a point. I overclocked an 805 to 3.9ghz. 3.9ghz, i beat an AMD X-2 4400+ and almost matched a 4800+ in algoramithic calculations and in multimedia (sisoft sandra). The 930 and 940 can pretty much do atleast 4ghz. At 5ghz, a 950 can pull about 24 seconds on Pi. That's fast for a 300 dollar processor. AMD's X-2 3800+ (same price pretty much) can hit maybe 29 seconds? I see a bunch of guys marveling at 29 second pi calculations with their X-2 but my friend just a little bit away can hit 23 second pi (these are all 1mb pi calculations). Intel's processors are slower, but they have more headroom and more potential to beat even an overclocked X-2.

Also, to put together a 2gb setup, motherboard, and a core 2 shouldn't be hard. ECS has estimated it's 965 board at around 70 dollars, intel's E6300 for 183 dollars, and 2Gb ram. you pick your choice. OCZ DDR2 667 2Gb kit for 147. or you could go DDR2 800, and spend a little more (around 150-200). Total, even with the RAM that costs 200 dollars, would make your total price..... $453 USD

You know it's Intel's new Israeli team that developed the Centrino CPU. That became the Pentium M which we all know was awesome. Well, for over a year everyone was telling the retards at Intel to move the Pentium M tech to the desktop market. They wouldn't listen to them at first but finally were coerced into making the Conroe, their first half way decent chip in years. If it weren't for the Israeli team, Intel would still be crap.

erm... youre a little mixed up. First off, "Centrino" is a branding - it encompasses the Pentium M, Intel internal WIFI, and an Intel chipset (currently i855, i915 and i945). Centrino did not "lead" to the Pentium M at all. Secondly, the amazing thing that the israeli team did was cut the power down so drasically with a large L2 and a more power optimized core - the base architechture itself is old as the hills, dating back to the Pentium Pro.

Further, Intel has had Conroe in the works much, much longer than the P4 has been lacking in competitiveness - it takes a very long time to develop a CPU, especially one that rocks as much as Conroe is shaping up to. Im willing to bet as soon as soon they realized that the 90nm shrink would result in such a huge heat problem and lackluster clockspeeds they started really working on a desktop CPU to retire netburst with. That was back in ''02-03.

Without Netburst (which I still hate) we wouldnt have Conroe either. Conroe is P6 + Netburst + new tech = Awesome new CPU. Without any of those elements we wouldnt have what we do now.

And to be fair, the Pentium 4 C series kicked AMD's ass when they launched. It wasnt until early 2004, when you could BUY athlon 64's (which were really expensive) that AMD started coming back - Barton was not really the strongest chip. I have one and I love it, but it really wasn't that much of an improvement over the Tbred-B.

A lot of us buy CPUs that are far from the "cutting edge" money wise anyway. Only a fool, or someone with lots of money would buy the latest greatest CPU. After AMD came out with the X2 processors, i got the X2-3800+, which was about 1/3rd the price as their 4800+ (and far faster than Intel's dual-core chips at the time). The 4800+ didn't offer anywhere near 3x the performance, esp after i overclocked.

I guess my point is, most people don't go for the most expensive (fastest) processor out there. They go for something that will give them good performance/price. One company may be faster at the ultra-highend, but very few people actually buy those processors (until they are cheaper, and no longer the best). That said, i'm sure the conroe will have some very competitive mid-end cpus also.

I personally don't anticipate buying a new cpu for at least another year or two, so i'll get whatever is better then :) Just buy whatever is better at the time you're upgrading. Being loyal to a giant corporation is just silly. I wonder if there are message boards to argue whether walmart or target is better :p

I'm gonna be patient for one more month and see where things stand after Conroe is out. I have no loyalties to either camp. My laptop is Intel, my last desktop was a P2.4C @ 3GHz, the one before that was an Athlon T-bird. I just want the best performance for my money.

ENOUGH WAITING ALREADY! I'm not a patient person! :p

the cost to performance on a conroe makes it seem more high end. Even the low end defeat or match the high ends.

I agree new cpu every 3 years is enough but I go for the top of the line thats out at the time from Intel . Conroe or woodcrest will be my last personnal build. Since I build gaming PC's I get to play all the time any way. My wife just got her new machine done so thats over with. Its more than we planned on but I got a super deal on the CPU. ;)

2005 Intel record the highest revenues and profits in history....that without a Conroe.

Anyway , Conroe shared with PM and Ppro the design philosophy : it is a brainiac design compared with the speed demon P4.

Well, it is time for Intel-philes to have their days in the sun. As an AMD-maniac, I did reveled in the X2 and opteron's successes and there were plenty of boasts and braggins by fellow AMD users at the expense of Intel-droids. It is only fair then that we endure this for a bit, until AMD comes back with something and the cycle rejuvenates itself. Of course, we will be hearing the same excuses and reasonings coming out of the AMD camp as we have been hearing from the Intel camp for awhile now.

Oh well, I don't plan on upgrading for awhile anyways. Found a new love, europe and Asia. So many countries to see, so little time and money to see them.

Hi All,

Thanks StealthFish for the link Impressive, most impressive.

I find it Ironic how people are bitching about the FX-62 and the Conroe XE like they own one.... let alone the fact that only about less than 1% of the population on here would own either of those.

It's like the members here bitch about the Enzo vs the Mclaren F1, it becomes a moot point when they will never own one or ever be able to afford either one. So it's more just like a bitching fest rather than a informative first hand exprience discussion.

Dammit !

I just switched a few months ago from a P4 3.0c overclocked to 3.75 on H20 to an AMD X2 3800+ with a DFI Expert board. I'm not about to buy ANOTHER waterblock, re-do my loop, and get a new proc and mobo to be back on the bleeding edge.

I think it's time to let sleeping dogs lie in this case (for me anyway). If I keep trying to have the fastest computer money can buy, I'll eventually be living on rice cakes and cat food! :p

Sorry my friend, I already do that

When processors are devalued, their platforms are as well.

Conroe RAMP up is expected to be 35% by Q1-07, not 25% as some FUDsters are trying to say.

I'm not concerned. My 2.5ghz processor is fast enough. I've only been seeing gains from changing my graphics card lately.

Thanks for playing.

Intel's own CEO expects their profits to decrease this year approximately 33%, and their stock keeps falling. Yeah. 2005 was a banner year.

Conroe is based directly off the Dothan, which is based on the Banias, which was based loosely on the P3. It was designed, as Obi_kwiet said, by Intel's Israeli team.
