Conroe versus Prescot?

In the coming months we will see the official launch of Intel's Core 2 Duo processors, based on the Conroe core. Only time will tell how availability will affect pricing of those CPUs, but Intel is quite eager to release them. AMD is also awaiting the launch of Core 2 Duo, though for different reasons; in fact one of its stipulations for sending out Socket-AM2 review kits was that the CPUs not be compared to Conroe. We understood and agreed with AMD's stance on the issue, simply because Core 2 Duo (Conroe) isn't shipping yet while AM2 is, but we do get a sense of concern whenever Conroe is brought up around AMD.

Can you imagine how much Intel would be getting flamed for that one?

50c at idle is "warmer then normal"? Try egg cooking warm. At high loads the FX chips barely touch that...and for people who live in hot areas with no AC, yeah, Prescotts get a bit warmer then 50c.

I personally hate benchmarks. What I like, however, is for my proc too not suck. I've seen Prescotts in action. My friends 3GHz P4 and 6800Ultra got destroyed by my 3000+ (OCed slightly to 2GHz) and 6600GT in actually game play. CoD2, HL2 and CS:S are not benchmarks, please play again.

Oh yeah, because the original Prescott wasn't based on Socket 478 or anything, nope, not at all.

Oh hi, my cheapy Athlon beats the living shit out of your expensive and OCed Prescott. Not very much bang for your buck. Please play again.

Yeah, and I get the idea that you won't except any facts that are presented to you, and instead will wave your arms around going "THEY'RE NOT THAT BAD SHU UP I HAT U" right before you stuff your fingers in your ears and sing loudly.

gg

Are you stupid? Don’t BS us by saying the 6600GT outran an 6800 ultra....BTW the HT from the P4s pwns all single core A64 in multitasking. Yes the A64 did better in gaming, but that wasn’t all that much and that doesn’t mean the Prescott suddenly sucks. You need to stop being such a f4nb0i. Don’t tell poncho what to do, he is clearly more knowledgeable then you. Who the hell cares if the core first came on SKT478, it was planned to be released on LGA775 anyway. The chip has lived most of its life on LGA775...

ha, dippy was trying to say that it isn't fair to compare a64 to conroe because conroe is next gen. Then I said using his logic it wasn't fair to compare the pentium 4 to the athlon 64, because the 64 is next gen. He still didn't really understand why his argument was flawed.

thank you cupholder, well said. Intel made these processors for productivity, not for the hardcore gaming enthausist. BTW, look, a 955XE against an E6600 pitted together. The E6600 pulled about 40% performance increase at 2.4ghz against a 3.46Ghz PD955XE. Does that sound good? or do you want me to put a 2 to the left of the 40 to give you the percentage the E6600 has over your AMD64s?

btw, i'm sorry, but I forgot how long ago did netburst come out? When did an X-2 come out? =O, amazing. don't compare old tech against new tech? wholey shit. keep your mouth shut and stop being hypocritical.

It's all the same, you compare what's out against what's out. Technically AMD still has the fastest chips, until conroe comes out. That doesn't mean I'm not looking forward to conroe. And btw, you can't say when did netburst come out and compare it to an x2. Netburst is an architecture, and x2 is a processor revision. X2 is basically two highly tweaked athlon xp's with onboard memory controllers on one die. So from an architectual standpoint, I would say X2 is as old as "netburst" processors.

btw, you guys heard of kentsfield, 4 core 8mb processor? Comes out Q1 2k7? that'e next year. I don't remember hearing much about AMD's new processors.

Conroe us out - people have them , have tested them, sure, maybe only specific people, but to me they are out and beating AMD so no, AMD doesnt have the fastest CPU :D, maybe the fastest one you can buy in stores right now :)

P.S - i am loving my dual core 820D 3.2ghz and 2 x 2mb L2 :D

Takes notes people: The only thing i'm a fan boy of is preformance. Never did I compair A64 to Intel aside from the one time with my machine verse my friends (which was kind of unfair, but kind of not seeing as A64s are basicly just pimped Athlon XPs). And then again it have been LGA775. I dunno. Like i said, he had no window and I had to take his word on what he said. Could he have lied? Possibly. Dunno. I'm just going one what he said.

I also love how everyone avoided every single point I made and instead insisted on calling me a f4nboi. Do I like AMD? Right now, yeah. But I'l; like Intel alot more when I see how the Conroe performs. It is extremely possible, and likely at this point, thats its going to be in my box at some point.

Also, hi, I'm AMD stock share. Yeah, I fscking skyrocked awhile ago. Of course, this didn't cost intel any moneyz, nope, not a bit. Theres enough stock to go around m i rite ?? Just like intels new chip isn't going to hurt AMD at all. Mmhmm.

Another thing no one bother to mention: Heat is a problem. I've already said it three times and have not gotten anything on it: The southern states are hot in the summer. Real hot. Also, not everyone has AC, so when that heat crashed their nifty little Dell, guess what probably caused that? Oh yeah, heat. People pass off 50c (in a generally comfortable room I'm guess) like its no big deal, but my friend down south wants me to build him a PC, and wanted an intel chip. A prescott. He has no AC and its 90 degrees down there, not to mention it was gonna be a shuttle case. Not a good idea.

Also,

I was about to say, what to do you think OEM were pushing out for a few years....just because the 0.000001% on [H] doesnt buy them doesnt mean intel lsot money.[/b]

wow, get out of the intel forum much? Take a look at peoples specs they post in their sigs. Apparently, while traveling the entire board and posting in different topics of all different kinds, I've only met 0.000001% of the [H] membership. Hrmmm, isn't that weird?

I don't know why its such a fight with you people. Prescott is old. There are better chips out there, and Conroe looming over us all. Please upgrade and learn to let go. If you're not going to upgrade, at least understand that it isn't a good chip. It works, and its fast at encoding. Huzzah for you if you encode alot, but that seems to be about it.

You have seen how Conroe performs. From independant sources. That are famous for being AMD-biased. Without authorization or supervision by Intel. How much more proof do you need?

I live in south Texas, it's not a good idea to preach to me about heat, air conditioning, and the deep south, mmkay? I built 20 machines for work last year; these machines are used in the refineries (you know, the ones you see on TV), in a shack, with extremely dirty conditions and zero air conditioning: every machine is based on Prescot. Yes they run hot as hell. Yes, they are rock-solid stable. These machines have been running 24/7, with the stock Intel cooling, in 100F+ weather, for the past 18 months. Don't try to tell me heat is a problem when you haven't experienced it yourself firsthand.

StealthyFish's arguement was against those who insisted that we stop comparing the K8 to Core architecture due to the fact that the K8 is significantly older, he was pointing out that using that arguement, you could also claim that Netburst and K8 should not be compared, for Netburst is older. There is no way that X2 is as old as the netburst, X2 is based off the K8, which is much newer than netburst architecture. You seem to suggest that the K8 is just a highly tweaked AXP core, in that case, I can claim that the Core arcitecture is just an highly tweaked P3 coreand that AMD is losing to an 7-8 year old arcitecture. BTW I do understand that P3 arcitecture is now much different than core, but it is true that that arcitecture has influenced core

hot? my prescott runs 33C in my room idle, 45C full load. Is that really hot? I think not. BTw, that's stock cooling with some intel thermal paste. Seat the heatsink right and you won't have heat issues. Heat doesn't make a processor shit dude. It performs too. It isn't miles behind AMD processors, and considering how old the architecture for P4s have lasted, that's amazing. Cupholder summarized what I was trying to get at well. Just read above.

I'm saying that things need to be compared to available products, not generations or architecture. Basically the same thing I guess.

You.re a chicken. Temperatures never hurt anyone, least of all the CPUs. It only makes chickens afraid :D

Power consumption is no issue. For full system consumption the difference is insignificant.

6600GT beating a 6800U, no way. You.re either a liar or stupid if you try to relate this to the CPUs. Probably a driver issue.

Read the H article on CPUs & Gaming. The advantage A64 has over Prescotts in framerates at low-res means nothing.

Most Prescotts have HT and chrushes A64 single-cores in multitasking. Prescotts are also faster or just as fast as A64 in many applications where time actually means something (encoding etc).

And btw all AMD AM2 CPUs are based on 939 and outdated, aren.t they? With nothing new coming from AMD for a long while.

Yeap, Hyperthreading is Fantastic

Also, AMDS HUGE MARKET SHARE. Guess what? It cost Intel millions. Keep in mind, 3 million bucks isn't really all that much too Intel...but it cost them money. Its a fact. Theres nothing to be "izzowned" about.

I actually have experienced it first hand. I wouldn't be talking out of my ass if I hadn't.

When I used to live in Kentuckey, we had a huge heat wave...110 degrees or some shit. Maybe more. Don't remember. Anyway, during that time, two different family members called on me for tech support. Their PCs simply wouldn't work anymore. No boot, not beeps, no nothing. Both were Dell, and both had Prescotts. Guess what happened? The chips fried themselves too the fscking motherboard. It smelled awful, ugh. My aunts computer got so hot that that the mobo under the CPU was actually blackend. I shit you not. You can call shens all you want, I know what I saw (and smelled).

Yes, they were Socket 478 boards, and yes I know the LGA775 chips are better. Doesn't matter to me, after seeing that, I knew for a fact that heat was a problem.

And thats supposed to stop me? God forbid someone sticks to an point that not everyone agrees with.

Walk Away.

No.

Prescott sucks. Apparently everyone knows it except for people who, for some reason or another, like to cling onto old technology. Its over. Let it go.

wow, incredible. 110? when i lived in arizona, temps never dipped under 100 during the summer. stfu. 110 isn't much when you've got 100+ every day. made 80 feel freezing. what did you have? 1 heat wave? lmfao. I think the guy that you quoted has more validity since those comps are on practically every day in those temps every day. I think your comp saw what? 2 weeks worth? not a whole life time.

LOL, 3 million dollars? to intel, that's a small dent on their car door. How much money does intel have? the largest microprocessing company in the world won't die out from that. Especially if you've seen intel's new line up, you'll know that intel's no where near the red as AMD will in the coming years. I don't remember Intel receiving assistance from AMD just so that AMD doesn't turn into a monopoly like intel did.

you know, you've gotta get out and learn something about processor architectures. you'd get why AMD processors can equal a netburst processor at a higher clock.

Another comment to your "crappy AMD processor," would that crappy AMD processor be dual core and clock to 4ghz like a PD805 can? Can your cheap AMD beat an X-2 4000+? Didn't think so.

You keep saying you're not a !!!!!!, but the more you open your mouth, the more you sound pro AMD, anti Intel. Prescott isn't as horrible as you make it out. Hell, i'm using my prescott. it's a good processor. Smithfields are essentially 2 prescotts placed into one processor. a Pentium D 805 is a good processor. dual core, cheap, and can OC well, perform well.

by the way, your "horrible" experience with burned out processors is due to a shitty case design. How many lower end pre-builts have case fans? I don't think I've seen many. 1 HSF for your processor and maybe one gfx hsf isn't enough to keep heat out. Stop making up bullshit. Prescott isn't a "POS," do some research or stop pulling shit out of your ass and givin it to us.

Used to be overpriced yea, but those price cuts changed that whole story. Yes, per clock they are inefficient compared to the K8, but at very high clock rates the performance is respectable. Not sure why everyone hates prescotts so much.

They were priced adequately before AMD and Intel introduced Dual Cores on the desktop, after that Intel hasn't to my knowledge dropped prices on them besides making the Prescott-2M the same price or cheaper as Prescott.

Intel has abandoned Single Cores basically and focuses on Dual Core so Single Core prices have remained stagnant, and only now when Intel is going to have a fire sale, that the remaining supply of Single Core are being chopped in price dramatically.

Once Intel's price cuts come into effect the Single Cores will be competitive enough on the Prescott (1MB) side for the lower end models compared ot the Athlon 64 3000+ - 3500+.

Cedar Mill however doesn't make much sense as even with the price cuts as you can get a cheaper or equivalently priced Dual Core Presler with the same GHZ basically.

Prescott performed well enough, it was behind Athlon 64's in some areas such as gaming, but had greater multitasking capability then Athlon 64's.

Sorry, no more room left on this bandwagon, have you ever used a pressy ? regualr usage?

Regardless, prescots are just bad compared to intels other chips. You guys trying to excuse them for being bad is kind of comical.

Yes, prescott's were not intel best decision - but to say they just sucked, makes it sound like they didnt work..... ?

they worked fine, they processed all the tasks people threw at them......

I laughed and called them Hottscotts and never liked them on Sc-478. That first stepping on 775 was better, then it improved again with the first refresh. That last stepping works great and is nowhere near or absolutely NOTHING like those first models. IMHO, on the the issue alone Intel should have never shipped them, especially the Sc-478 versions. I stuck with my Northwood.

Personally I never liked Prescott but understood why folks wanted them. I went AMD only because Desktop support for Pentium-M was almost ignored, as you know. The last Presler I played with was schweet indeed.

Oh yes it.s so comical I.m laughing everytime I play Quake4 on my P4 570 system with two instances of Folding running in the background. Try that on your celly and share your experience with us.

Where is that "Welcome to last week" picture.... come on guys get over it.

Intel has been moved over to volume production of 65nm chips. Cedar Mill, Presler & all the variations of CORE!!! (Yonah, Conroe, Woodcrest, Merom).. etc

Prescott is so last year, get over it! And even then, the last revisions of Prescott 6x0 were actually great clockers, and ran decently cool.

You mean you.ll get 10 fps more at 640x480 with nothing else running in the background? Sure. Now go ahead and game at hi-res with folding 100% in the background. Yeah I.ve seen that on A64s and it doesn.t look good. You.ll find out.

Periods != commas. Regardless, they'll smack around your 570 in 1280x1024 too... since my vid card doesn't become gfx limited in CSS (extremely cpu intensive, source engine) and ut04 (also cpu intensive) which are the games I play.
