That's right. I caught it.
I've really been captivated by the amazing OC potential of the Conroe platform, not to mention how My X2 has really been... well, falling apart on the inside. It turns out my board had been overvolting the processor to almost 1.72v (measured with a good multimeter). The poor little guy just choked today and would refuse to boot at anything other than 2.2ghz (luckily at stock voltage in a different motherboard so I know it'll last as a sever proc. in an undervolted condition)
Luckily, I came into the ability to score an E6300, P5B Deluxe (non Wifi) and 2gb of the OCZ Platinum PC2-6400 RAM for a grand total of just over 600$ CAD shipped (which is really tough to beat, considering this setup is about 750$ at most Canadian e-Tailers with the taxes and ship gouging).
My questions of course are as follows:
1) Does anyone see a problem employing this Ram/Board/CPU? Specifically, it seems that lots of OCZ ram doesn't like the default voltage it's being fed... I dont have any other DDR2 Ram on hand either...
2) Will I notice much of a speedup between my X2 3800 at 2.6 and this at stock?
3) How far do you think I'd be able to push the new chip, on water.
4) And lastly, if I did get it to 2.8ghz, what do you think I'd have to get my older 3800 X2 to match it
.
I've read that the P5B, with a newer bios, has the ability to push the chip well into the 425+ FSB range... almost giving me 2.9ghz, a substantial increase over the 2.6 3800 X2. Am I right/wrong?
Either way, I think I HAVE to make this upgrade... I guess that 7800gt will have to hold on a little bit longer before it becomes obsolete
.
Thanks, once again.
PS: RIP X2 3800, you've been good to me.
