Confused with all these 4k monitors

OK people, I dont know anything about monitors. But whats up with with all these 4k monitors??? So 4k is twice the resolution of 1920 x 2 = 3840 -- 1080p x 2 = 2160. Thats 3840 x 2160 (4k). what about 2560 x 2 = 5120 -- 1440p x 2 = 2880? Thats 5120 x 2880 (probably 6k). Most of us use 2560 x 1440 or 2560 x 1600 monitors. Why aren't we getting those monitors? I really didnt like 1080p monitors. I am pretty sure you guys have higher resolution monitor than 1080p. Please help me clarify.

wtHUH?

It's hard to tell based on your post, but are you complaining about the aspect ratio of 2160p?

I think he wants a 16:10 4K monitor.

fact is, the world has pretty much gone 16:9 for everything...so they will support that first. Not to say that 16:10 isn't down the pipeline.

I don't think it's anything about the aspect ratio.

What the OP wants is higher resolutions monitors.

lol..sorry didnt explain enough. I do want a higher resolution monitor. 1080p doesnt work for me. I am currently using Asus PB278Q. Just wanted to know if they are going to make double the resolution of 1440P?

4K is still a higher resolution than 1440 or 1600. Since the next proposed standard, 8K, is already being pushed, it seems the industry will mostly skip over 2x 1440/1600 resolutions ("6K").

They may still end up coming into existence, but I still view 4K as the next logical step over 1440/1600.

Thank you for clarifying. So basically 2x 1440/1600 is (6k). I really hope they make it. I dont mind 8k either.

... Why does it matter what the resolution is multiplied or divided by 4(it's 4, not 2)?

Not yet.

We barely have any 2160p models and those that exist are just one huge cluster fuck.

I think what OP meant is that he is using a 27 inch 1440p/1600p monitor now, and if he wants to go higher, his only option now is 4k. 4k @ 27 inch will make everything look smaller (even if he scales DPI @ 200%, it'd still look like a sharper 27 inch 1080p panel).

At 27 inch, there is no good option right now or in the near future, because:

- 1080p: isn't as sharp, sreen real estate is low
- 1440p: perfect real estate, relatively sharp
- 4k (native, non scaled): text would be hyper small
- 4k (scalled 200%; effectively a 1080p-like real estate): great sharp text, but no real estate to work with.

==> the only "good" option, would be a "6K" display as OP states: 5120x2880p @ 27 inch, meaning great real estate, great text.

Holy crap, you can scale text separately from the rest of the desktop!

You are right evilsofa, and it is indeed an option, but for those wanting a "1440p-like" desktop, only more crisp, they're out of luck. I'm guessing that that's what OP's question was all about. (and TBH, that's my point of view as well.)

Yes, there are a number of 28" 4K monitors being announced this week.

ppi = pixels per inch; the higher the ppi, the smaller the unscaled text
27" 2560x1440 = 108.79 ppi
28" 3840x2160 = 157.35 ppi
28" 1920x1080 = 78.68 ppi
31" 3820x2160 = 142.12 ppi
39" 3820x2160 = 112.97 ppi

39" Seiki 4K monitor at Amazon for $500

OP might want to give a Seiki 39" a try. Very similar ppi to 27" 1440p, huge real estate.

Totally unecessary unless you a really use it as a professional.

Not a professional.....DO WHAT I WANT!

Cintiq 24 btw
People spend thousands on gpus for fun. Why can't I spend 2k on what I get fun out of?

Maybe even a professional one day.

You read my mind!! This is exactly I wanted to explain. Sorry for being a noob. Don't know much about resolution and scaling. I guess I better do some research. But yeah I do want a 5120 x 2880p monitor. Ohh why are you guys referring me as OP? Kind of confused about that now.

OP is short for Original Poster. I.E. you started the thread. Or maybe you're just over powered.

Looking forward to the reviews once all these monitors get released. Probably won't jump right away tho.

Uh, that's something like 17:9, not 16:10.... and probably massively expensive since 4096x2160 is not a consumer resolution. 16:10 "4K" would be 3840x2400, and I doubt anyone is going to make a monitor of that resolution again. There are no panels available of that resolution currently afaik, and I haven't heard any plans to make any. There's always a used IBM T221, though!

Scaling options exist between 100% and 200%. Like, say, 150%. Sharper text *AND* more real estate. Tada! It's like magic!

There's nothing special about 2x, you don't need that at all.
