I do lots of music recording and gaming. I recently bought a M-Audio Delta-44 sound card with the 1/4" connector break out box.

My question is this...

Can I record with the M-Audio box and have my Santa Cruz card handle all the playback? If so, how the hell do I configure this. Im asking because at the moment I dont have the money to buy a power amp and monitors to use with the Delta 44 for playback (and even when I do, will my normal PC sounds be played back on the Delta 44 too?!)

I record with Cubase. Before, I went from my guitar preamp directly into my Santa Cruz card. Now I boought the M-Audio 44 and I want to use that as my main sounf device. Does it do playback for games? The problem is, I dont have the proper speaker set up for it right now to configure it for playback, so I'd like to use my Santa Cruz for playback ONLY....

under the Sound properties you can set preferred recording device and preferred playback device..

also almost all recording programs i have had to deal with let you select which device to record with..
 
Right now I actually have 3 sound cards in my system. I've got the integrated AC97, an Audigy2 ZS, and en EMU 0404.

When you open up the “sounds and audio devices” control panel and click on the audio tab, you’ll see two spots where you can select the default card used for playback and the default card used for recording. Whichever sound card you select here will be the card that the majority of windows apps and games will use. The only real exception being that any program which has an internal setting to use a specific card can use whichever card you specify within that program.

I currently have my primary card set as the audigy2zs, and my primary recording card set to my internal (for some reason, my microphone just works better using the onboard card…). And then for my music apps, I have them manually set to use my EMU 0404.
 
If i want to record with my delta 44, playback with my Santa Cruz and hear what I am playing as Im plugged into the delta 44, do I have to run the delta 44 output into the santa cruz input?
 
Nope, your software should allow you to pick which card you want to use for playback/monitoring
