I hope you guys can help me with my little dilemma, I have a problem with my computer not turning on.

Yesterday everything was running fine, I downloaded a few pics off my camera, made some adjustments in Lightroom, then emailed them out and shut down the computer for the night.

Today when I come home, the thing will not post. As soon as I press the power switch, all the fans come on as usual, drives spin up, cd drive checks for a disk, but there is no signal at the monitor, no HDD activity, and my GPU fan doesn't come back to a low idle speed.

So far, I've tried reseating everything but the CPU because I'm too lazy to find my thermal paste. I will probably try that next, if you guys think it is necessary.

There is also no post beep with the speakers turned on.

This has happened on 2 other occasions, several months ago. However, each of the other times I just turned off the switch on the power supply for 20-30 seconds, and then it would boot as usual.

A quick search leads me to think possibly bad ram or bad mobo. I don't really have any spare parts to swap out to help in troubleshooting.

The build is about 1.5 years old.

Sorry for the long read, but I appreciate any info you guys can provide me with.
 
Clear CMOS and see if it posts.

If it doesn't, reassemble the PC outside of the case, with the mobo on top of the mobo box, and start up the PC by jumping the two power pins with a screwdriver. If it posts then, then something inside the case was shorting out the mobo. Check for a loose wire, screw, etc.
 
Great suggestions in the above post.

Clearing CMOS has gotten me out of similar situations many times.

Reassemble the computer outside of the box with only the most necessary components connected.

Clean all dust from the components.

When you rebuild it outside the case, just use enough parts so that it will post.
No drives, nic card, one stick of ram etc, etc..
If the fans spin up but you get no vid or bios beeps then ...........
See if you get bios beeps with no vid card.
See if you get bios beeps with no ram.
Try another stick of ram.
You will get only get beeps when you remove the bad part.
If you get no beeps at all, then its either MoBo, CPU, PSU.

Luck ........... :D
 
Also, when 'testing' to see if it is the RAM, be sure to use a different slots to determine bad board/RAM
 
:( Well, I tried, but no luck.

I swapped the ram around, different sticks in different slots, same thing each time.

On another note, there are no beeps, but the bios beeps do not typically come from the external speakers, am I correct? This mobo does not have an integrated speaker, and I do not have a modem installed either.

It looks like the egg might be getting more of my paycheck, maybe upgrades are in order;)
 
I just wanted to thank you guys for the help!

I tried each remedy, and of course, the last thing I tried was the cause. Turns out, both sticks of ram are dead. I put off new ram because I had no idea how cheap it is now. I built the computer a year and a half ago, and the 2 gigs I had cost around $220, now I have some Corsair PC6400 for less than $50, what a difference!

It's great to have my PC back after 2 weeks waiting. I don't know how many more times I could wait for that old Pentium 4 Dell to do its thing!

Unfortunately the problems aren't quite over, it turns out my DVD-RW drive has gone kaput as well. I hope it is all just coincidence, and my power supply isn't slowly killing components.
