I have a R9 270X Vapor-x with an AMD A10-5800k. I was just wondering would it be wiser to upgrade the CPU or GPU first? I have $400 I can spend, and pretty sure it wont be until the end of this month or later until I can have enough to upgrade both. ALSO! If you have a suggestion for the GPU/CPU that would be appreciated as well.

what games are you trying to play and at what resolution? Or applications you are trying to use

Do you have a fm2+ motherboard?

It's an FM2 regular. I know I need to upgrade the MOBO as well but just wondering what I should upgrade first.

You should upgrade your CPU/Motherboard to something different. The only advantage to using that setup is for the onboard graphics. Since you aren't using it then Intel will perform a hell of a lot better with that discrete GPU.

With that said you should be looking at an Intel i5 processor mated with a descent motherboard. Should set you back about $280 for the upgrade. What RAM do you have? Depending on the answer you might be picking up some RAM with the remaining balance.

Also what PSU do you have?

I would just upgrade the gpu if you really need to based on what game you want to play.
I don't think steamroller is worth getting a new mobo and cpu.the carizo apu should be out soon enough for that.

@skillz I'm currently using DDR3 1600. Do you have a suggestion for Cpu and Mobo? I was looking at the 8370 non E with just a basic AM3+ atx mobo. Would that be necessarily better than an Intel cpu and mobo for the price?

I would try to get a cheap 4670k and motherboard. Certain games like total war don't run that good on amd when you have a lot of units out on the map.

@skillz do the benchmark sites really matter? It says the 8370 has considerably more benchmarks than the 4690k

Synthetic benchmarks are basically more or less useless. When Skillz said the 4670K is faster, he's looking at real world benchmarks like actual games and programs, not synthetic bullshit.

So I also support Skillz' recommendations.

Ahh gotcha. Thanks so much for the advice :)

What about used options? I got a z87 mobo and 4770k for a bit over $300... you could probably get the majority of your upgrades out of that $400 unless you hit the current gen gear. I'd definitely go Intel though if you're replacing the board. I was an AMD fanatic for years, but they're just not competitive anymore. IMHO, YMMV and all that of course! Good luck... and above all, have some fun with it.

@alembic Damn man I wish I got a deal like that. I actually bought an i5-4670K and a z87 Asus Pro mobo off of another HF user for $240.
