computer too cold?

hey, i have installed 4 case fans, (overloading psu to kill it) and i was wondering if computers can ever get too cold?
 
Maybe if you lived in the yukon or Siberia, but not really, considering that there are people with Prommies cooling down the case below zero C.
 
people use phase changing cooling solutions to keep their cpu at -50C, and there's no way you'll get that with 4 case fans. you're fine.

lets just say that there are people who successfully used liquid nitrogen ( thats in the -°C) and well i think most people on here would agree that there is no such thing as too much cooling, or too cold.

but yeah, if a comp get TOO cold like in the -80°C i believe that the electrical currents on the mobo and stuff won't work...

you know what i mean
 
No matter how many fans you have, there is no way your case or chip temperature will ever get below room temp. It can equal or exceed it, but never go below.

I don't think you can get "too cold" on fans, but why are you trying to kill your PSU?
 
only thing for being to cold is extremely fast changes or condensation. but neither will happen as long as you are only running fans. as they will only carry excess (releative to the environment) (superfluous above room temp) heat away.
 
Not possible to get too cold with room temperature. Also, I doubt four fans will be enough load to kill a power supply.
 
Actually, these guys are all wrong. It might get too cold...

So first get a blanket, and wrap it around the computer. Then try and find a space heater or something to blow on it... You want to keep it warm, if it gets too cold it might catch a virus. :D

I don't know if you're referring to the same article as I am, but I wouldn't call liquid nitrogen a feasible cooling solution. Its chemical properties just don't work very well for a PC. The guys I read trying to do it almost got it to work, but the piping didn't work out and liquid nitrogen leaked all over the motherboard and processor, soaking them in vapor and small quantities of water, thus rendering the motherboard and CPU inoperable.

Four case fans are definitely NOT going to freeze a CPU. I'm curious, but what would make you think that it's possible to do that with case fans?

There are quite a few articles on LN2 cooling attempts, the majority of them successful. Not practical for daily use, but nothing too hard. A lot of labs, research facilities, etc use LN2 for microprocessor cooling on a regular basis, some with permanently installed equipment.

I'd storngy advise against trying to kill psu on purpose - you may kiss some of your hardware gd bye...

new to cooling? people have done LN2 many, many times, its not even considered that hard core anymore. Hell, phase change is slowing replacing WC as the next big thing
 
Hmm, it seems that others learned from mistakes of the past. I don't exactly follow the latest cooling solutions, no.

Call me lazy, but I just have no time nor the patience to figure out water cooling peltier units and phase change systems. College and work keep me busy enough! :D

Too cold is when it gets so cold the resistors no longer function and your computer comes crashing down.

A superconductor microprocessor would be nice though... too bad it takes very low temperatures.
 
For a few months, we had a pc in the shop at -60c to -65c on a combination of phase change and peltiers.

When the pc would get too close to -70c it would actually freeeze up windows due to freezing.

It's a nice accomplishment!

well, if the current is cooled down low enough (not really possible in the case of computer) it can become somewhat of a superconductor, which means the current keeps flowing even after the voltage is removed. Not sure what this would do to your motherboard, but I'm guessing it wouldn't be good.
 
Short of freezing something and causing it to contract to the point where it no longer made connections it's kind of hard to have it to cold. Unless of course you get it down to 0 Kelvin in which case you will probably get a Nobel prize for science. Some things conduct really well at low temperatures, some things don't so it depends a little bit on what the CPU is made up of and how you cool it.

As far as killing a PSU with case fans you will probably need somewhere around 40 of the things to even have a chance of killing a PSU with those things. Fans pull almost no power compared to everything else in the case.

Only real threat you have to worry about with the cooling most of the time is condensation shorting things out on the board. As for liquid nitrogen i'm not sure what "chemical" properties it has that cause problems. Seeing how the air is made up mainly of Nitrogen and liquid nitrogen is just gaseous nitrogen with a lower temperature I really don't see it having any chemical affect on the board. The condensation caused by lower temps is what you need to watch out for. And of course freezing it solid and dropping it on the floor doesn't help either.
 
umm no ammount of fans can make a case the same tempature as the outside air, you have to put energy in the fan to spin it which due to conservation of energy, the energy lost due to friction does not dissapear so it has to heat up the case, but yeah, you shouldn't worry about being too cold with case fans, even with liquid nitrogen, you are more worried about condensation than being too cold.
 
its kinda true, when was the last time you said "that girl is so hot that she isnt fuckable":D :p
 
Somewhat related, but as many in the Carputer world (http://www.mp3car.com) many have found out. Fluid bearing hardrives do not like near 0°F tempratures. When that cold, most FB drives just won't spin up, or it may take several tries to make them spin up.

Regular ball bearing drives seem to have no problems.

HUH????...TOO COLD????...FOUR FANS??

i had 11 fans running in my computer and it was not cold....but i had to take out three because it was really pushing my power supply, a while ago, i had a thread about my computer shutting down every ten min or so from start up if i dont use it...THATS why it was shutting down, too many fans running, and still warm
