I built the rig myself two years ago and it's been running with relatively little problem every since. I brought it home from school a month ago and it ran fine when I set it up. It's been sitting in my room unplugged and unused for about three weeks until last night.
I hook it up, turn it on, and there's no video. I reseat the video card and I get a posting beep but the screen says it failed to boot and before it continues I have to reset the CPU speed. So I do so, save settings and quit, and nothing, just black.
I turn off the computer, wait, turn it back on and the same thing happens. I try to reset the CMOS, but after I do that the computer doesn't post when I turn it on. No beeps. The fans are spinning, I can hear the hard drive spin, the cd drive opens and closes. So I turn off the computer and take the heatsink off the cpu. There's just the smallest bit of thermal grease still left on the cpu core, but a little buildup around the edge. Also there was what looked to be a slight discoloration around the core, but that looks normal.
Any suggestions as to what the problem is? From what I determine it's either the CPU, mobo, or power supply. I was planning on upgrading to an AMD 64 with a new mobo soon anyways, but I'd like to know what is still good.
