Computer suddenly not posting.

I built the rig myself two years ago and it's been running with relatively little problem every since. I brought it home from school a month ago and it ran fine when I set it up. It's been sitting in my room unplugged and unused for about three weeks until last night.

I hook it up, turn it on, and there's no video. I reseat the video card and I get a posting beep but the screen says it failed to boot and before it continues I have to reset the CPU speed. So I do so, save settings and quit, and nothing, just black.

I turn off the computer, wait, turn it back on and the same thing happens. I try to reset the CMOS, but after I do that the computer doesn't post when I turn it on. No beeps. The fans are spinning, I can hear the hard drive spin, the cd drive opens and closes. So I turn off the computer and take the heatsink off the cpu. There's just the smallest bit of thermal grease still left on the cpu core, but a little buildup around the edge. Also there was what looked to be a slight discoloration around the core, but that looks normal.

Any suggestions as to what the problem is? From what I determine it's either the CPU, mobo, or power supply. I was planning on upgrading to an AMD 64 with a new mobo soon anyways, but I'd like to know what is still good.

During that transport from school -> home, was there any rough handling? It just might be the reason. And discolorations are not good at all. Might want to re-apply some thermal paste and do a proper total fit and check for something loose. Must've must have been loose. If you have or had a rug at home / school, then possible static charge must've occured. Who knows?

Of course, to test the PSU, make sure the system runs bare without any optional devices.

Well when I replaced the heatsink, I used the factory AMD one that has a thermal bad on the bottom, rather than the Aeroflow I had been using. Tried to reset the CMOS again, but nothing.

Coming back from school it was in the backseat of the car with two 2" foam pads on either side wedged in between some other stuff. It seemed like it was snug, but the peculiar thing is that I had the system running just fine for a day after I'd gotten it home. What exactly would a static charge damage, everything?
