Computer shuts off after a couple seconds (new computer help)?

Hey everyone. Last night I was working on a new computer for my friend. I was installing an AMD Athlon XP 2500+ 333 FSB and a Soyo Motherboard.

The problem I am going through right now is, everytime I attempt to turn on the machine, the LED light on the motherboard turns on and both of the fans on the motherboard spin for about 3 seconds, then it shuts off.

Does anyone know what could possibly be wrong? My friend bought some case that came with a power supply, and it never said anything about "AMD support" although it does have the right connection and it claims ATX 2.03 support. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
 
Check all the connections and make sure all IDE cables and molex connectors are all properly connected. Have had many problems occur from these mistakes. Also try using a different PSU, it may have taken a shit. Does the computer post?? Make sure the jumpers on the HDDs are set appropriatly as to being master/slave. Do you hear any beeps?

Thanks for taking your time to reply. The computer won't post and there are no beeps at all. I will try to replace the power supply and give that a shot. Any other suggestions will do. Thanks in advance.
 
My god how many of these threads are we going to have?????

Check connections, swap parts, try with bare minimum, yadda yadda yadda. There should be ONE sticky for non-booting systems, and we could cut about 25% of the forum threads down.
 
See if there is an RPM monitored fan plugged into the CPU_Fan connector on the motherboard. If not, many boards will do what you just explained. It's looking for the RPMs of the fan connected and if it doesn't find anything, the board will shut off since it thinks there is no fan on the heatsink. This can also happen sometimes with very low RPM fans that are attached to the CPU fan header. They either don't spin up fast enough or the board registers the fan as spinning too slow and will shut the system off.
 
I had the exact same problem when building my dual Xeon system. My problem was the ram I bought. For some reason it was not compatable with my motherboard (supermicro). I swapped out the ram for some ECC Corsair and the system worked perfectly. Try some different ram if possible.
