I have had this EXTREMELY annoying problem for about 3 weeks. I am trying to install ANY OS on my computer. I have had my motherboard and one of my 160 gig western digital hard drives replaced under warranty. my hardware is as follows.

Antec Sonata Case w/ 380watt ps
Asus A7n8x-x Motherboard ( NEW and replaced under warranty)
EDIT: AMD XP 2200 Processor w/ amd fan for a 2800
1 - 160gig WD hdd (NEW and replaced under warranty)
Liteon CDRW
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256 meg (NEW)
640mb DDR 2100 ram by crutial
logitech keyboard (ps2)
logitech mouse (mx500 usb)

when i go to install either windows xp, OR redhat 9 it will lock up before it will finish. with windows, it will get about 1/2 way through the setup then it will lock and the only thing i can do is restart. With redhat 9 it will get to the point where it copys the install image over and is just before it actually installs the packages and will freeze up.

i have tried using different sticks of memory, borrowed a friends cd drive, it did this when i was using my old radeon 7K video card. Do you guys have ANY idea as to what would be causing this? im so fucking frustrated right now its not even funny :(

should i disable ALL the onboard stuff? could that cause it? or is my powersupply causing things to fuck up?

please help :( :( :(

I had the same problem with an amd system once, turned out to be a flaky cpu, i swapped it with another and the OS installed just fine.

This sounds like it could possibly be cpu or psu since you seem to have eliminated everything else already. Unfortunately, my best advice is to keep on swapping out parts, probably starting with psu.

I've had USB keep me from installing WinXP pro completely. Unplug all of your USB devices completely from the back of the PC and use a PS/2 keyboard and mouse instead and then try installing. Worth a try anyway.

In most cases where I have seen this problem, it usually turns out to be a CPU or RAM problem. Since you have already swapped out RAM, then it's probably not that.

Try reseating the heatsink and fan and maybe clean off the thermal goop and reapply. This could be an overheating problem with the CPU. If it's not that, then I would try to find a different CPU to toss in there to try. The CPU itself could be flaky.

Also, check BIOS options for the RAM and CPU to make sure everything is setup correctly. It could be anything from timings too tight on the RAM to the voltage being set too low for the CPU.

I feel your pain.

I have the same exact problem with a motherboard/CPU/mem combination of mine. NO OS will ever finish installing. This includes Win2k, XP Pro, Mandrake, Gentoo, Damn Small Linux, Knoppix, etc... well the bootable Linux distro's don't ever finish loading.

I guess its the CPU? I'll give it a shot. Cause mine has a very small chip in it, but some people claim that their AMD's still work depsite the chip marks on theirs.

well i tried a friends XP3200 cpu.....no go.

Put MY cpu back in, and then put one stick of his memory in an BAM!!! it worked

so the best that i can guess is that 2 sticks of crutial memory went bad at the same time

oh well....memory is cheap! im so f'in happy i found out whats wrong
