computer freeze/crash -where to get report

when my computer freezes or crashes once i boot back up successfully where can i go to get a log and find out what happened? is a log kept? how can i go about determining what is causing my freezes and crashes?

this is a new build so im not sure whats wrong

Event viewer would be a good place to start. It won't give you any clues about freezes (that require a restart) though.

Event Viewer is one thing. Another useful thing is WhoCrashed:

But you need to install Microsoft Debugging Tools to make it work right. It works with BSODs.
