Computer does not power on

My PC does not power on. I installed my XFX 6950 2gb and it took a long time to fully boot (~8 minutes). Once it got up it restarted and took another 8 minutes to start up. It finally got up and I went and downloaded the latest drivers for the 6950. As it was installing it ran into several errors. Sometimes I could hit retry and it would go forward, other times I had to 'ignore' it. It hit 100% but I did not get any "successfully install driver" screen so I decided to restart. Explorer.exe closed (I assume) because all I saw was my wallpaper. It did not fully shut down though. I held the power button for about 15 seconds and it did not respond so I turned the PSU off. Now it will not turn back on. I have removed everything except the CPU and it still will not turn on. I unplugged the PSU from everything and did the "paper clip PSU test" and the PSU turned on fine.

I tried to list everything I did but if there's any more information you need please feel free to ask.

What else can I do to troubleshoot and/or resolve this?
 
Specs of the PC would help.

Also did you try pressing the power button on the case to start the PC?

Yes, I tried pushing the power button. I also looked in the case to make sure it was wired correctly thinking I may have possibly pulled it loose when I uninstalled my old GPU (GTX 260) and installed the new one but it is secure.
 
Can you try your parts in another PC?
Did you reset CMOS?

I just tried another PSU I have that is working in my other machine and I had no luck. The same thing happened, the yellow power light came on (on motherboard) but nothing else.


The only thing I had installed were the CPU and 2 fans hooked up to the motherboard.
 
Note: I forgot to mention near the end before I pulled the plug it BSOD


Also, when I tried the second PSU I also hooked it up to the other cases Power button and tried that several times. That didn't work so I tried the screw driver method. I'm starting to think the MoBo is dead and the next time I use the screw driver it will be in a stabbing motion.

Is there anything I can do to confirm the Mobo is dead?

Not too sure about this one but maybe try different set of RAM. Anyone think this will make a difference?

I've tried each stick.

Correct me if i'm wrong but as long as the mobo works it should send the power to the fans so they spin regardless of if there are any components connected.


On a side note, Is DFI dead or something? I called their number and some chinese guy picked up and was very confused. Their website has next to no help on it and I can't find any other support information.

Sadly, DFI is now completely out of the enthusiast motherboard business. The only motherboards DFI sells and supports these days are "industrial motherboards" that are not sold through resellers.

You said you had the fans connected to the mobo; do those spin at all when you try to turn the system on?

Do you have a system speaker/buzzer plugged in? If so, does it beep when you try to power the system on without any RAM nor vidcard installed? If it beeps, then the board could be fine. If no beeps, then you can try re-seating the CPU. If it still doesn't beep after re-seating the CPU and powering it on without vidcard/RAM, then the mobo is most likely dead.

No, the fans don't spin when I try to turn the system on.

I don't have a Mobo speaker plugged in (but i'm looking for one). I have tried reseating the CPU and that hasn't worked.

Once it's hooked up i only see the yellow power light but I get no other response from the system.


I just don't understand what I could have done to cause this.
 
Er...Grounding issue? Just throwing this out.

Can you try powering on without the case? Like placing the mobo on a cardboard with the CPU, RAM and VC and powering it on that way?

This. several times people have brought computers to me that "would not turn on"... 75% of the time there was a grounding issue.

I thought of that earlier and I tried it on a wooden table (thought I heard that would do the trick as well) and no luck. I have a box available so I can try that when I get home if it will make a difference.
 
if you have another case, see if that has a speaker.

not much difference between a wooden table and a cardboard box.

I went through all my PC's here and I don't have one. I knew I had one but I don't know what I did with it. I even went through my bins of misc computer stuff and I didn't see it.

I also went through several different models at work but they're all integrated (Dell's).

I ended up ordering one for $5 shipped. IMO it's kinda pricey for such a simple thing but I figure this won't be the last time I use it so it will be worthwhile.
