Well, this is the general hardware section... I suppose it falls under this category.

I'm tired of sitting in a POS chair and I want the opinions of people who have spent some serious money on chairs.

Do these mesh chairs on the market stand up to abuse? They look flimsy.

I'd love to find a chair with a curve at the base of your back (lumbar support) and a neckrest that you dont have to lean your head back to reach.

How do these expensive chairs really compare to your standard $150 leather backed manager chair?
 
I've done a bit of research on this. Below are the best of the bunch, from what I've found, but they are all pretty expensive. I work for hours on end at a computer everyday and I was planning on buying one of these myself someday. A lot of people will swear by the Aeron, but of the people I've talked to who've had the chance to try the different types of chairs, all have preferred the Steelcase Leap over any other.

If you don't need a neck-rest, and really in need of good back support, skip all of those and get a Herman Miller Mirra for your back- it's 60% the price of some of the other chairs, easier to maintain, and much lighter.

If you want neck support, get a recliner and put that in your office. Don't sleep at your desk. :)

They make all the difference in the world. I'm amazed at the pics I see of people's $3K-$5K first person shooter boxes here and they're almost always sitting next to Walmart or worse furniture... I seriously wonder about their priorities, or in the case where it's kids posting their EXTREME NINJA l33t GHETTO RIG!!!, the priorities their parents have conveyed to them.

A good video card might last you 5 years... a decent piece of furniture, nominally the same price, will last you a lifetime and add a lot more to the quality of your life than an electronic piece of junk. Things like desks and chairs do affect your health.

Unless you're a total fatass that breaks chairs on a regular basis. Not only will it not last you a lifetime, it's not gonna do much to your health either. :p

On a side note, I'm in a desperate need of a comfortable computer chair. I'm no fatass, but this hard plastic arm chair just doesnt cut it.

Thanks for the post. I have read this about the leap too, but there's a lot of advertisements that look like reviews on the web so that's why I wanted to post here. And while I could mabye stomach paying $500 for a chair, I don't see myself ever paying $1,000.

I have sat in an Aeron, and it seems like a nice chair but nothing amazing (unless that comes from long periods in it).

The one I posted seems like an Aeron for half the price with better lumbar/neck support.

Have you ever sat at a chair with really good neck support? It's pretty amazing and not just for sleeping. I can't believe that more chairs don't have it. Makes it really comfortable especially for long sessions answering emails :)

i would suggest going to a "computer chair store" and just sitting in all the chairs. Personally i sit in a black leather(propbably fake), computer chair that costs me $40 bucks, i went down to office depot one day, and sat in all the chairs for like 2 hours, and found the one i like....its awesome...

also my rig is close to $4K....maybe your right...haha
 
Well I've sat in those chairs too, and for the short time I had in an Aeron they just don't compare. And I'm not saying the Aeron is that great...

The problem is that you can't really test out the high end chairs... they are hard to find locally. And if you do, it's just one or two and not the whole lot of them.
 
Looks like a nice chair, but that thing would kill my back.

Of course not everyone has $250,000 worth of stainless steel in their lower spine :)
 
Limp Gawd I purchased one of the Ergohuman chairs you are talking about. I have owned it for quite a while now and love it. The lower lumbar support is unmatched by the other chairs mentioned on this post. I highly suggest the chair and have recommended it to many of my friends. Good luck in your search.

Thanks for responding, I have a lot of questions if you can answer them:

Did you buy the mesh or leather?

The one with the headrest or w/out? Can you lean your head against it without leaning back, or is it only for reclining?

Have you tried any of the other high-end chairs?

Do you have any pictures of it?


Do you feel it was worth the $500? It's hard to purchase something so expensive without a chance to sit in it!

Thanks for the help! Anything else you can think of would be great too.

I've noticed this myself. I've seen more than a few $5,000 Alienware boxes sitting on $60.00 Wal-Mart desks.

Granted I'm only using a Jerker from Ikea, but it's very sturdy and a hell of a nice desk for $200.00 (with options) and it beats the piss out of anything found at Wal-Mart and Target.

I can also say the Aeron chair is very comfortable even though it doesn't look like it would be.
 
Herman Miller - Aeron:

I will be found dead in it one day, I will have a smile on my face. worth every penny and lifetime warranty. Guess any of them are worth the money, your ass will thank you.
 
I found this thread while browsing for some more information on the new colored Ergohuman chairs. I first purchased the ME8ERGLO back in Oct. of 2006, it is the mesh one without a headrest. There is a posting on this website from me as well as some other owners of the different ergohuman chairs http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000240.html . If you want to get a chance to sit in one before buying it I suggest going to a local Office Depot store, they have them on display for $599.00. I have had a chance to sit in three high end office chairs: Leap by Steelcase, Liberty by Humanscale, and Aeron by Herman Miller. In my opinion the Ergohuman is the best buy out of all of them. You get all of the same features for half as much money. Once I started adding up different options for some of the other chairs they were $1000 or more. With the Ergohuman you get a top of the line chair with the same or more functions as the other chairs. $500 was a lot to spend for me too, but I'm reminded for 8 hours everyday now how much it was worth it. I recommend sitting in the ME7ERG before you buy it, $500 is a lot of money if you don't like it. Just my two cents. ;)

The jerker is an amazing desk cheap or not. I have one too and I love it.

What about the colored ones? They are fabric? Do you like the mesh or leather Ergohuman more?
 
I like the mesh much more than the leather. The leather chair is a bit stiff and gets a little warm after sitting for a while. The colored mesh I am talking about is the same material as the black mesh, but in very bright colors. I had heard a rumor about them coming out but haven't found much else on it yet.

How does it compare to an Aeron? I sat in one for a short while and it didn't seem THAT comfortable. It didn't have any lumbar support and I saw that they sell ANOTHER accessory to add it to the chair.

Also, I know you don't have the version with the headrest, but did you sit in it? Could you adjust it so that it held your head up without leaning back or was it like all the others that are only useful when you recline?

How does the mesh compare to the Aeron's mesh? And do you think it will hold up over time? It seems like the leather would be much more durable than the mesh.

I spoke with someone at Beyond The Office Door and they explained the mesh came from the same manufacturer as the Aeron chair. I was assured it was a very high quality and I haven't had any issues thus far. The lower lumbar support is excellent, I mentioned in my first post how it is unmatched by any of the other chairs talked about in this thread. The Aerons *optional lumbar support is a cheap molded peice that slides into the backrest. If you ask me that is a pretty cheap way for Herman Miller to add lumbar support to a chair that retails at $1000. This chair has the best lumbar support offered on any chair I have sat in as of today. From my experience the headrest will give your head and neck support when sitting upright in the chair. It was for that reason I ended up going without a headrest. I felt it got in my way while sitting at the computer. I would assume though that the headrest is a popular item, since that is the only model at the Office Depot. Good Luck, after you get a chance to try it out let me know what you think :D

Thanks a lot. I have to go out of the country for work so it may be a few weeks if I can't find it at office depot tomorrow or the next day but I'll be sure to post.
 
I tried it out at Office Depot. It was raelly comfortable after I raised the back so the lumbar was in the right place.

Is there anyway to set it so you can recline only halfway?

Did you screw with the controls and get it perfect? Just wondering how much better it would be if I had it at home and could get all the adjustments just right.
 
Oh_my_god.. we have those stupid $1500 ergo chairs at work, and they suck. You do get good back support and adjustment, but they wear out your clothes. After a few weeks, I have holes in my pants around the wallet area from the material constantly expanding and contracting at tension points widdling away at the fibers of my khakis. :p

That doesn't look too bad, but I'm really looking for lumbar support it's so much more comfortable for long periods of time.

And the adjustable headrest on the ergohuman is really nice. It swivels so you can contact your head/neck in different ways. You don't have to actually lean back to make your head touch it.

I read about that with some of the mesh chairs. Luckily I don't wear anything resembling work clothes around the house.

Which chairs are they do you know?
 
I don't know which exact brand they are, but they look remarkably similar to the one you posted on the first page, except without the middle 'bubble' design. Same mesh material though. Great chairs, but bad design that eats your clothes. :p

Anyway. I have a ~150 suede chair I got from Staples. It is SUPER comfy!

I see no need to buy an ortho-chair in my case.. I don't exactly sit all day.
 
Yeah, I don't sit all day either, but for the few hours I spend at the desk (at home) I wouldn't mind being more comfortable :D

Another Jerker here! I didn't realize there were so many out there. My GF has one too, as does my former flatmate.

The chair does look awesome though. I have a really crappy chair that's probably destroying my lower back. I need a new one.
 
I read they discontinued the Jerker.

And yeah, if you have an Office Depot near you go sit in this chair. Definitely opened my eyes at how crappy my current one is.
 
do these chairs squeak? I have this cheapo 20 dollar one from officedepot and it started to squeak recently and my roommates and i hate it. I don't want to use WD40 to lubricate it, so I'm just looking for a nice chair that will never squeak. Any suggestions?

The $500+ chairs? No. lol.

Good chairs cost good money. At home, I have a Steelcase Springboard ($500; got it for less than half that though). I just like how it reclines. :D

I dunno what I have at work, but its comfy enough to let me do my job without needing to stand every so often, hehe. My homie who specializes in saftey and ergonomics said its an $800 chair. :eek:

i couldnt stomache paying $100 for a chair my $60 chair is uber compfy and ill never get rig of it :p
 
what would you guys recommend for a good $60 shipped chair that I could use for 10+ hours a day and would last 1-3 years

I can't think of any. You usually get what you pay for and $60 doesn't buy you much of a chair. I typically pay around $100-$175 for chairs every few years. Since 1998 I've had three chairs. The first one I bought only lasted about a year. Some of the welds broke while I was leaning back and I crashed to the floor. The last one I bought for around $150 and I used it from 1999 to 2007. I retired it because most of the padding was worn flat and I was starting to wear through the fabric. I just got my new chair at the end of Febuary and it's been awesome thus far. I hope to get at least three years out of it.
