Posting for a friend. I don't keep up with computer hardware like I used to so don't know whats good and stuff

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Gaming (Guild Wars 2, Diablo 3, TERA, etc) , browsing, porn

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
Around $600 with tax and shipping

3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.
US, MN. Have a local MicroCenter

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
CPU, RAM, Case, SDD, HDD, Video Card

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
Power Supply - Antec HIGH CURRENT GAMER 750watt

6) Will you be overclocking?
Probably not

7) 7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?
1680x1050, no ideal what size

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
Over the next couple months

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video (as a backup or main GPU)? UEFI? etc.
Just standard features needed really

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If so, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?
Yes, Vista 64bit (but I'll prob hook him up with a win7 key)


Originally saw the microcenter deal and was thinking AMD FX 8350 CPU and Gigabyte GA-990 motherboard but then I see the i5 3570K is recommended a lot so no ideal.. His current computer (which is blue screening all the time) is a old Intel 2 core E series and old video card is a nVidia 8600 or something so pretty much anything would be an upgrade I guess

Unfortunately our parts recommendations do change with time, price, and availability in a month and sometimes even weekly. As such, whatever parts we recommend may not be the best part to buy a month or two from now.

Well, he said he was going to buy parts slowly, like 1 or 2 every paycheck. Lets say within the next 3 months.

That's never a good idea for a number of reasons. The three main reasons are.

If a part comes DOA, you wont know about it until after you've bought all the other parts. In that time, it could be too late for a simple return/exchange through the vendor you bought it from and you'll have to send it to the manufacturer and have it covered under warranty which usually takes a lot longer.

Speaking of warranty, it starts when you buy it. Not when you first use it. So the parts you buy now, 3 months of it's warranty will be wasted.

Last, but not least as this is probably the most important. In 3 months new technology/parts could render the parts you bought 3 months prior obsolete while still costing the same.

Therefore if you would have just saved all the money up at once and bought everything 3 months from now you'll know immediately if something is DOA, you warranty will last longer and you'll buy the most up-to-date parts.

ok, after bugging my friend for awhile.. we're going to go to Microcenter to buy stuff in a couple hours

I believe he's looking at the Intel Core i5 3570K 3.4GHz LGA 1155 Processor, not sure on the motherboard. He doesn't want to go broke on the video card so I was thinking a ATI. How have the driver issues been with ATI?
