Computer Build (Building my own)

Was that really necessary? He came looking for constructive criticism meant for swaying him away from his already firm choice. Its what most people do, find what they want, set it in there mind thats what they want, and then try and get people to sway them away from that, if they are swayed, then it means there is a big enough difference.

I think it was. He asked for advice and when he got it, took it the wrong way and was very, very rude to 90% of respondents, especially for a nOOb on this particular forum. Not the behavior one would expect from someone brand new to the forum looking for advice and then lashing out at people because they state the obvious (frivalous waste of $$)

Some people just have too much money to spend on a computer :p. I have a mate who's considering allowing me to design his personal LAN setup. We're building it in his basement since that's where we hold our LAN parties at. He's freaking rich but knows jack about hardware and has given me a 3K per PC limit (without monitor) and I'm suppose to build 8 computers, I plan on tossing a64 3500's in them and 6800GTs w/1GB PC4000 ram, sad thing is I'll have a crap load of $ left over (I might not even use but 2Gs of it and just build SFFs or something).

What I'm getting at is that you don't need to spend what most people don't make in a month, on 1 PC. My major Hardware 2 cents: Get 6800GTs or maybe Ultras, but don't get 512MB and get 2X74Raptors and put them in Raid 1 then if u still want a crap load of space then get 4X400GB and put them in RAID 0, that's 1.6TB of space for 1 Gaming computer!!! My mate's father's PC doesn't even have that much and the dude backs up all his DVDs on his HDDs! (in RAW DVD-R ISO format)

Remember, you asked for suggestions and we're giving them to you. Buying and building a PC shouldn't kill the bank, least now a days it shouldn't.

Alright, how about this.

Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
AMD FX-55
2gig Corsair XMS PC3200 DDR
6x74 gig WD SATA Raptors
Turbo-Cool 850 SLI
2xeVGA 512 GeForce 6800 Ultra
Creative labs Audigy 2 ZS Platinum(maybe pro.. depends on the case i get)
Creative Gigaworks S750 7.1
Zalman Resivator (GPU+RAM Cooling)
VapoChill LS (CPU Cooling)
Plextor DVD-+RW SATA
Plextor CD-RW (SATA if i can find one)
DiNuvo (Bluetooth)
Razor Diamondback
Nostromo n52 Speedpad
x52 Flight control system

I would like to have my HDD's run at the same speeds, so i can access everything at the same seek speeds. Im planning on getting the XMS Low Latency Series.

(I appoligize for being rude, i took things wrong. All of your help is appreciated.)

6 raptors is totally unecessary, do you have plans to run them in some sort of raid array? or what?

your specs are getting more realistic though

Dual-Core chips will have a 939 version you can use, so don't drop almost a thousand dollars on a CPU now! They'll be out within the 2nd half of this year, or as press indicates, maybe MUCH sooner (very likely given Intel's hurried efforts.) How about you grab a 3500+ Which is GREAT for gaming, sell it for most of its value on ebay after the DC A64s come out and switch up to one of those?

If you want to overclock, the DFI NF4 Ultra-D SLI is the only real way to go. It will allow attainable CPU host clockrates you cannot sustain on any other board and is the OC'ing board of choice right now. The Asus A8N-SLI also has reliabiltiy issues; loads of them are dying. I've seen it myself.

2 6800 Ultras is a bit of overkill, they're not really worth the price to performance ratio; I'd save a few hundred by going to 6800GTs and just overclocking them.

For RAM, XMS is really not worth it and has about a 2 FPS increase difference in games, it's been tested time and time again. Latencies do NOTHING for gaming. Go with Kingston ValueRAM and just double up on it and STILL save money.

Hard disks-- Raptors are HOT, LOUD and FAR too expensive for their speed increase (SMALL!) and for gaming load times, they do about nothing. A few seconds less out of a minute's load time, literally. I have built 3 boxes with Raptors and each time it is the same. Go with 3 Seagate 7200 RPM 200 GB disks for that money and STILL save, get almost the same speed, but near dead silence, low heat, extreme reliability, and a LOT more space.

For your power supply I suggest you switch to Enermax's SLI model for all the connectors you'd like and loads of power, plus room to grow (a ton of it.)

Swap the Plextors for NEC 3250A drives, they support almost every format, and are amazingly quiet, fast and reliable. Also, SATA makes 0 difference on optical drives. The mechanics are the bottleneck, NOT the bus, and they will have the bus to themselves. You can slap 1 on each channel, even, with the HDDs populating SATA.

If you do go with the reserator, switch the GPU waterblocks. The ones from Zalman are AWFUL. They don't mount well, and have a straight passage for water, no grooves or paths, meaning lousy heat dissipation-- FAR HOTTER Than air cooling.

The FX-55 does NOT need vapor cooling to overclock. The highest overclock attained with it was done with air cooling. A silent Zalman CNPS7000-AlCu will get you a gigantic overclock. The FX-55s do not suffer from the absurd heat output levels P4s do, this may be why you think you need something like this. If you just want SILENCE, put everything on the Reserator, or if you want a heavy overclock and silence, get something beefier like a solid internal kit or a Koolance Exos. The Reserator is designed for quiet but NOT able to sustain a very large heat load-- the water temperature just rises more and more over time, as the radiator fails to deal with the heat dissipation chores.

Thermaltake's Big Water set mounts to any 120mm fan port (or even 2 80mms) in most cases and will sustain your CPU just fine, even overclocked-- it is designed to handle the absurd heat load from Prescotts of >115 watts. :p The FX-55's thermal spec is only in the 80's to begin with. If you need more cooling power you can attach a second radiator, or perhaps a faster pump. The guys in the water cooling forum will gladly help you with it but expect them to tell you to mount a car heatercore bigger than a cow on the side of your case. You don't need that. ;)

Haha you better take some pictures dude :D

Can't wait to see them. Don't back out dude ;)

if money is no object, why has no one suggested the dual tyan board (nf4 pro), 2gigs of pc3200 low lat, dual 252's (san diego clone) and dual ultras?

i agree those drives are a waste, 2 will do you just fine... and if you really want that kind of speed, go SCSI, not SATA. hell, i can get you a few seagate baracudda 146gb 10k drives :p

want some? ive got access to tons.. weve been selling them on ebay for like 250-270 bucks a pop... theyre all teh U160 version

actually, my buddy just told me to put 6 more up :p its perfect!

Alright, another update, Im curious, though, is there a limit on how high I can overclock an FX-55? Becuase I wanted to see how far i could push it before it hit 0 degrees c

I would run 2 raptors in raid 0
and two big storage hard drives should be good ... if you need more get them later ...

LOL, sorry bro, not into giving that information out. And if you want it, work for enough money to buy it yourself.

BTW, if anyone can show me something that shows that more ram will produce slower framerates, i would love to see it.

The Athlon 64's will revert to a 333 Memory speed if all 4 ram slots are populated.

Thanks for the info, though i still do like having the majority of my drive bays filled up.. and i have 5 in the Lian-Li tower i am considering getting.

As for the VapoChill, having a hard time finding it.. any stores you know of?

If anyone believes this line of rubbish, especially from a first post, then I have some swampland in Florida to sell you. I'll even build you a bridge.

Does anyone here have ANY idea what this system costs? The average kid on a message board can only dream of looking at the pictures, never mind buying that kind of system... When they are overkilling everything to a severe extreme and willing to wait for hardware that doesn't even exist on the open market yet that should send up red flags.

In other words? Don't bite.

are you jealous? lol

It's not really possible to be jealous..it was simply a waste. You could've just bought yourselve a car. I would.

I asked for suggestions on switches, not for ridiculing statements about what might, or might not be true. Yes, this system is going to cost upwards of 6k, I know that, and I AM PAYING IT. I want the best I can get, and I want to see how far I can push the hardware, like I said. I want to see just how far I can push an FX-55, and the 6800s..

If you want to push it:

2GB RAM maximum
keep the CPU, GPUs
Get the DFI board
get one mega big eff-off PSU (from a good manufacturer like Antec or Enermax)
2xDVD RW for DVD to DVD burning
Creative 2ZS
Some nice speakers and cans
good keyboard, a logitech MX510/518
Nice monito, 12ms minimum

and with all the money you save, buy one of those vapochill case things that cools your CPU to -50 degrees celsius or w/e, then overclock the bitch to hell and back

EDIT: bugger, soemone beat me to it

that looks like a very realistic rig (ok, fine, maybe its my dream rig....) anyways, i would say go ahead and buy that if you can afford it. it looks awesome, and it will not let you down!

good luck and happy building!

I think i will wait to OC much, until i get my hands on a multicore chip later this year. And Ill see how far i can OC it while on Water, then get the Vapochill later on and see how far i can OC it on that.
And If the raptors are Loud and hott, I dont really want to get them. Not when the speed difference isnt all that much. If I could find some 15k rpm HDDs on new egg, tigerdirect, or zipzoomfly, ill get a couple of those, unless they are loud and hott as well.

Oh, and why would I want to buy a car? Its not like I dont already have one.

Well, then im going to go with 6 either Seagate or Western Digital 400 gig SATA drives.
2.4tb of space. Great for playing with Satalite images from the hubble in photoshop, and saving them.. As well as all of my cd's, dvds, games, 6megapixel photos and, while im at it, i might as well convert all of my VHSs as well

I think by the time you see those 512mb ultras you will probably have the FX-57 to play with :).

Man...2.4 TB's? I have a 300GB HD and don't know what to do with all the space :).

Yeah, i have a little too much time on my hands. I have a 400 gig hdd attached to the laptop im using right now, and its almost full. 390 gigs used. Ive had it for about a month
