What are the components needed to POST? My friend has a mobo, CPU, and PSU, and his computer won't give any beeps and the fans won't spin, does he also need RAM, or any other component.

ram vid card are needed to pass the POST but the fans should spin anyway so you gotta make sure that the power button is connected to the right header...

  • Motherboard sat on a nice piece of cardboard,
  • CPU and heatsink (the heatsink is very important - if you're inexperienced enough to ask if the system needs RAM installed to boot, then this needs to be spelled out. The heatsink will need to be installed correctly and its fan will need to be plugged into the correct header on the motherboard or it likely won't POST, or maybe even kill the CPU if it does)
  • One stick of RAM
  • PSU
  • A video card and monitor if you want to see the lovely A:> prompt.

A screwdriver to short the power switch header will suffice to turn the thing on.

...all that, and some MoBo's are fussy about being booted w/o a keyboard. A floppy is nice so you can actually boot an OS (to run Memtest86+, drive tests, etc.).
