Complete shutdown while gaming?

Hey folks, cant figure out this wierd issue.Whenever I load up a 3D game (eg. Prey) I play for a couple of minutes and the PC shuts off like someone flipped the switch,no warning, nothing. This just started happening lately.I built my rig over a year ago and since then have played all major titles with max settings and had no problems at all.I'd even OC'd the card to play Carbon and had no problems.
But lately it seems anyhing graphically intensive and it shuts down.I've cleaned the CPU and the card and also keep the side of the cabinet open but stilll the same thing.
I'm suspecting the card or the PSU.The GPU core temp goes around 65C or may be more
and the VRAM is around 48-50C under load .Is that too hot for video memory??What is the ideal temp under load for VRAM and Core.?? Help me guys!!!!!

My rig :

AMD 3000+ Venice core
MSI K8N Neo4-F
2*512 MB DDR400 Ram
Leadtek GeForce 6800GS
PSU is local brand but a good quality one (20A on the 12+ V rail)
Also have a couple of fans inside.

it sounds like your psu. and for the record, your PSU, rated at 20A on +12v, is only 240watts. Is this a 400w total output PSU?? go get a $10 PSU tester, it sounds like it's dying under load, for sure.

Sorry, forgot to mention it is a 400W PSU and like I said I've been playing all major games for over a year with it (Carbon,COD2,Hitman -blood money ).What could have caused the PSU to just crap out like that ?

Lets say something was overheating ,shouldnt the game crash and come to the desktop?
I have the MSI Core Center running in the background so if it were the CPU I should be getting an alarm of some sort.Same thing for the GPU.

that makes me lean even more heavily towards it being the PSU at fault. Sometimes they get caps that burst, or burn up. Sometimes the fans seize and it overheats. Sometimes people just buy cheap power supplies. I'd go get a tester, and stop leaving it to chance. Sometimes, when a PSU completely burns up due to overload/overheat, it can take something else, or everything else, with it, when it dies.

its probably the power supply... either that or something overheating.

agree 100%.

if you're playing online, and it's crapping out, make sure your northbridge is being cooled well, and the HS hasn't come loose, or the fan isn't dead.

if you have the MSI core center and stuff running then yeh its probably not something overheating otherwise you'd know about it... id say do what the guy before me said and go get a power supply tester for sure.

My HTPC rig was doing this but it turned out to be heat.

Once I installed another intake fan and replaced the crappy one that came with my Gigabyte Aurora, my temps dropped dramatically and I haven't had any problems since.

I agree with the folks here, I was recently at a lan party where my system was next to another guys, (his intake fans were next to my exaust fans,) and he kept restarting, (as in complete shutdown,)... we figured it out after i noticed the outside of the case was a bit on the toasty side...

Cheap fixes have been listed, check PSU, and check temps.

thats a psu prob. my brother got the exact same problem a while ago. the fact that it didnt happen 1 year before is another hint(i bet you loaded the psu with some extra fans or hdds within this year and now it can not make it with the extra load).

I'm going with PSU, did you put anything in recently? or more USB stuff than you usually do? I had this happen a while ago though albeit it doesn't happen unless I set it to high.

Actually the rig is the same as I got it a year back and have'nt added anything new since then.I'll try and get a hold of another PSU and post back. Also what other components draw power from the 12V rail?
