I have been wanting to build a box that can hold all our DVD's, expecially my kids copies so they don't get ruined and I dont have to keep changing them out all the time. I have heard you could somehow rip all your DVD collection to a media pc and stream them back in HD to your tv? But when I do a "how to build a media center" search on google and such all I get is a guide to audio.

Is there a complete guide somewhere taking you from the hardware/software setup to ripping your DVDs and playing them back in HD?

I understand from a tech standpoint your don't need a super strong system outside of a ton of storage space. And I would guess a good TV adapter that can output in component? So is that it, then windows media center?

I would love to do this and have something to follow, I have never even attempted to rip a DVD to the pc before.

The DVD library implementation I use also includes the ability to stream Movies from my Netflix account, without ever leaving the Vista MCE Interface. Definately read the sticky in this subforum by w1retap for HD playback, it's very useful. Software you'll need:

Vista (recommend 32bit)
Haali Matroska's Splitter (google it for free download)
CoreAVC x264 (google it)
ffdshow tryouts (google it)
DVD ripping software (recommend AnyDVD)
MyMovies (this is the database software backend, and the Vista MCE client plugin, which can both be run on the same machine)
MyNetflix (Vista MCE plugin that allows you to view your Netflix Watch It Now features)

Recommended specs (can be done for about $250, without a BluRay drive, add $100 if you need to buy Vista):

1) decent looking case, reasonable airflow...no wind tunnels
2) low wattage PSU (like an Antec 380)
3) AMD 780G based board (HDMI w/audio)
4) AM2 X2 BE2400 CPU
5) 2GB of RAM
6) Optical drive of your preferred media format
7) Drives large enough to hold you media needs

Optional:

1) ATSC HD tuners
2) BeyondTV
3) Media center remotes
4) HD Home theater setup
5) Offloading storage needs for DVDs/media to a WHS box, or other desktop not in the livingroom, and having it run the MyMovies SQL database backend
6) BluRay/HD-DVD/DVD Burner
7) Media center style HTPC case
