My system specs are in my sig.

I'm building a computer for a friend of mine. he's only running a 17" lcd monitor, but has high expectations for his new rig. I've suggested something in line with my x800xl because I know it'll fit his needs.

I have an opportunity to simply sell him my card for approx ~220. I'm not making a profit on this build (nor do I ever), but I am selling him some of my older hardware that's in perfect shape (antec true430 etc)

I play all my games at 1680x1050 on a dell 2005fpw and I dont intend on upgrading that anytime soon.

How much better is bf2 (etc) going to run on a 7800gt.

I appriciate the time you've taken to read this and look forward to your valuable input.

well you can get a 7800GT for under 300 right now at tigerdirect with rebate even with out its 330 and i think the X1800XLs are still 450ish

i run maxed out in BF2 right now 1600x1200 no slowdown at all dont know the frame rate but its more then play-able

you can get x1800xls for around $390 but that is beside the point. if you had a 7800gt you would be able to player with higher settings and more aa/af....i think its a good idea selling him ur x800xl and u getting a 7800gt

I am quite happy with my X800XL, however I am already looking forward to a next generation part. It has plenty of horsepower in last generation and older games, but the fact that is really just a scaled up 9700Pro limits its capability going forward for next generation games. 7800GT is the killer card right now - it's delivers the vast majoirty of the performance of a GTX for a lot less $$$, and gets you on a newer design. Often comes with CoD2 to boot :)

I love my X800XL, as its pretty much the fastest card you can buy that doesn't require an external power connector, but it also has its limitations. If you have the money and a buyer for your X800XL, 7800GT is a worthy upgrade IMO.

If he can wait some time, or you in this case, maybe the prices on the x1800xl will drop to the 7800gt level.

yeh u can get a x1800xl if you want, seeing as they have similar performance....i wouldnt be worried about selling your x800xl, id be worrying about what to choose between the x1800xl and 7800gt :p

good advice, thanks everyone.

I figure if I can sell him sthe x800xl for enough that I'll be able to pick up a 7800gt for ~100, I'll seal the deal.

otherwise, I just can't see it being worth my time.

Exactly what I did, kinda. :D

I went with the EVGA 7800GT. #1 free SLI mobo. #2 Free cod2. #3 lifetime warrenty even if you overclock and put an aftermarket cooler on it. #4 the EVGA comes overclocked already outta the box :)

Now I only got 1 7800GT. But the fact that 6-10 months later I can get another 7800GT and take advantage of SLI...

Hope this helps (and yes I almost bought a X1800XL but the free SLI mobo and FREE cod2 did me in)

P.S. Also forgot the EVGA step-up program

you are AWESOME. I was totally unaware of the free motherboard deal. That'll make the purchase much easier for me, since I'll be giving the free one to my buddy for ~50. That's a huge savings for him and a nice lil profit for me too.

So, what's up with the step-up program?

humph, might pass on the motherboard deal. He's spending over 1100 on a partial upgrade, so I really don't want to put something questionable in. The egg reviews were good for a 'free' motherboard, but too many were questionable.

thanks again!

Well I myself just did a $1400 upgrade....I have done nothing in the last 5 days cept read reviews etc. I found out the EVGA mobo is basically the jetway mobo just restamped EVGA(and anandtech gave it RAVE reviews specially with sli being jumperless)

Ill let ya know how the mobo goes I get my shiet on tuesday (<3 newegg)

Anyway either way good luck with your shopping :) both cards are very good

X1800 XL vs XFX 7800 GT:
Hexus gives us a head to head between the Sapphire Radeon X1800 XL 256MB and XFX GeForce 7800 GT 256MB. Tune in to find out the winner.

ATI's catchup has seen fruition on two fronts. On the one hand, it has now successfully launched its own multi-GPU technology, CrossFire. Secondly, the long-awaited R520-based cards have finally been released and reviewed to general acclaim. The top-end of the market, by which we're talking about GPUs costing upwards of £200, is once again a battleground of smarter technology that delivers better performance across the board (bad pun intended).

There's no Battlefield 2 benchmarks but you should be able to get an idea of the performace differences.

did he ever even mention once the X1800XL...why are you guys talking about it, he has an x800xl and debating going to a 7800gt right...

the ati's won't be worth it until they come down to nvdias price point. even then with evga's step up program I'm glad i got a 7800gt from them. ati will hopefully catch up in a year or so but for now the 7800gt is the best buy price/performance wise.

heh. You're already selling him your x800 for $100 less than the 7800 gt AND you're selling him the crap motherboard that comes with your 7800gt for $50. So for $50 more he could get a copy of COD2. Ignorance is bliss? :D

While I don't agree with DougLite about it being a scaled-up 9700pro (w/ the programmable memory controller, lots of new features, etc), the 7800gt is the better value. Go 7800gt if you can.

Is the 7800GT/mobo bundle still available on newegg? I cant seem to fint it. Only place I see it is on TigerDirect and I'd rather get it from newegg.

dude, we're talking about the x800xl. not the x1800xl.

in BF2 you will clearly see the difference since the 7800GT will allow more eye candy, i reckon going with a 7800GT will be a good choice since that is a new built system.

Or you could just wait until the G72 chips comes out in a few months.
