comp freezes while gaming

hai thar

like title says, my comp freezes while i play.
i play stalker clear sky, eve online, cod 4 and cs: source. (i also played some spore)

now, thing is it only freezes when i play stalker and spore, and i have to reboot.
i get all kinds of colors messed up in lines/squares on the screen.
it happenes in stalker after about 30 mins, and a few hours into spore.

i suspect that it's the 4850 that's overheating, as everything else is running cool and i've even underclocked cpu and memory.

thuoghts?
 
I had that same issue with my Nvidia card when playing games. Turned out my PSU wasn't powerful enough to run all the stuff I had and that card. Do you have a utility to show you the temps of the 4850 just to check that as well?

Sounds like the video card since you mention artifacting. The Seasonic 430W PSU should be enough for that system. But to rule out the PSU completely, use another PSU.

ah yes the psu... i'll crank up the fan speed and see if it still crashes, thx!
 
not the fan speed on the gpu (ran on 100% and still crashed).

i lowered the graphics to medium and now i think it lasted a bit longer, and it only CTD'd this time, not a full freeze.
 
I know it sucks to do, and most likely you don't have another just laying around, but were you able to try another power supply?
 
i tried my brothers PSU (whish runs a 9800GTX so it's more than enough, can't remember exact W but well over 500W), and high settings, it CTD'd (which froze with my own PSU).

You're running the latest drivers and all that right? Try your card in his PC? I know that's not really an apples to apples but it might work.
 
updated to 8.9 drivers and eve online still crashes (never done before i installed stalker), havent had time to test stalker yet (patched).
 
tried my old memory and crashed.

using my old 1600xt now and no crashes.

went to pc store yesterday to get a replacement, will take about a week
