Command & Conquer 2 - F2P

obviously by making unique units and buildings that are available ONLY through cash shop purchases.

"An ever-evolving experience, enhance your game with an expanding array of content based on how you play."

"Based on how you play" = Whether or not you decide to spend $$$

IMO

And if that is the case I will not give a single fuck about this title. Which is a shame because it looks really awesome.

We are talking about EA here. Seems completely within their realm of expertise to take a good franchise, with an awesome game engine, and somehow turn it into complete shit. Only they could pull off such a level of epic facepalm.

Yeah, I can see F2P work in MMOs, but for RTS...Doesn't bode well for the title.

Yeah, no doubt. The only thing that they haven't ruined for me is BF3, though they tried pretty hard.

For I believe a brief period ea gave away the entire original c&c collection everything before c&c 3 and some others. I managed to get everything before it disappeared. Very nice gog type installers. It was a very odd thing for ea to do. I can dig them up if anyone wants them.

Not sure if this is a good move from EA, Command & Conquer was never the same when EA killed Westwood and acquired the franchise.

I could let a single F2P RTS game go as a curiosity or test-bed for something bigger, but with EA saying that the now-renamed Command & Conquer is to be the first in a planned new series...I don't know...

piscian18, you'd better bust out those installers. :)

it was part of red alert 3 when they released it. they had all the original games available for free for a short period. minus the C&C3 games. i had them for a while but deleted them.

That is how most if not all games are going to be is distant future. F2P with the option of DLC and stuff. Just gotta get used to it. Everyone needs to get paid , stop being cheap.

You mean all these while game developers haven't been getting paid?

The video game industry did just fine since the days of floppy disc. Big publishers are just greedy and want more money for less work.

If they're counting on people playing it multiplayer, I don't see why F2P couldn't work for an RTS? They could sell unit designs, paint schemes, decals/logos, shield and engine exhaust colouring etc. There's all kinds of things they could sell that wouldn't affect game balance. Will they do that? Who knows, but they could.

The sad part it's got to be free to play because the last one was so bad that fans of the series won't touch another C&C game they'd have to pay for.

the C&C series was the de factor RTS for a long long time. I remember playing the original C&C on my Packard Bell 66Mhz Machine, full motion video and stealth tanks blew me away.

the C&C series went to crap right after "Generals" - I had some fun in college playing with buddies. The instant they decided to introduce aliens --- PASS.

They took something awesome and amazing and milked it till it's a dry shriveled shell of it's former self. Maybe if they did a reboot and went back to the old days of how things were I'd be interested. But making something fun, for a set price, and not screwing your customer base for an extra 5 dollars every 2 months would just make too sense, so obviously they won't go that route.

I actually enjoyed C&C3.

You realize their games had aliens in them before Generals, right? *facepalm*
