Comcast Profits Rise, Subscriber Growth Falls

so thats why comcast called me

they called and asked if i wanted the basic cable package, so i could get a discount on my internet. they said "we will hook up basic cable for free and youll see an $11 drop on your bill overall". i asked the guy how comcast could give away more crap for cheaper, and why, and he couldnt answer that. i said "well, you called me. obviously comcast isnt happy with my $60 a month, so they want to lower my bill by giving me more?" he acknowledged it didnt seem right and i told him "since the offer isnt clear, and comcast has a long-standing reputation of ripping off its customers, dont sign me up for anything. i will be getting rid of my internet too, as soon as i can".

Hahahaha, I bet he was like, "WTF!!!!?"

all we need is czar obama to say comcast is not doing their job for them to go out of business. i wish he would

Let's see, you raise prices, and you lose subscribers.

Damn, I just can't figure it out !

They must think economics don't apply to them at all as long as they maintain their local monopolies.

I'm going to assume for a moment ya'll understand it's completely based off where you are located versus who you have.

I had Comcast at Fort Lewis, WA for 5 years and not once did my bill change and I had 1 outtage the entire time. I have Comcast now in Woodbridge VA and again not one problem the tech even got me 20 Mbs down 3 Up for 30 a month, phone (Unlimited) for 10 a month and HDTV w/HBO and STARZ for 70 a month for an entire year.

So you are the exception? You need to go buy some lottery tickets, dude.

Yeah really. In France, you can get Cable TV, Phone Service, and Fast Wireless internet 4MBPS download for 30 Euros a month or $45.

They even give you a wireless router.

lol, I wish it would cost the same price here...

I call BS.

Since I have lived there apparently they still have not added any.

So if by "cable"

You mean "Canal plus" (the other two get piped in without a box) then yeah, they have cheaper cable than the US. As far as the internet and phone, I cannot comment.

Comcast is such a ripoff. I have their triple play with digital cable, internet and phone. It started out as "$99" a month which ended up being $140 per bill but now it's jumped up to $244 now that the deal's over.

And I have all of one premium channel plan at an additional $10 a month. WTF is up with these prices?

My Comcast bill has been the same for years. Where are you getting your information from?

To those who complains about Comcast's quality, you seem to forget that technicians are people too, and in every town there are different technicians with different skills and knowledges. My town's Comcast has been nothing but superb and I would recommend them to anyone. Try not to generalize Comcast based on your own town's service. If that technician worked for another provider, you'd get the same quality (or lack of it). It's the person, not the company.

The only competition for internet service is DLS which really isn't competition at all. I had Adelphia before and they were pretty good and a lot cheaper till Comcast took took over. I may get Direct TV and Verizon DSL and dump there ass's.

The best part is, the adelphia customers (after comcast bought adelphia), were forced to pay a higher monthly fee for service compared to "normal" comcast" customers.

I was adelphia and forced into this.

Comcast tried to pull the date drift on me; then got VERY nasty when I demanded to know why they were expecting me to pay for Octember when they already force you to pay ahead one month.
Comcast took out my cable for 4 days; they got VERY confused when I was upset that they were making zero effort to fix it.
Comcast abruptly changed my rates and more than doubled my bill; they got VERY nasty when I demanded to know why and then refused to pay that bill, or a disconnect fee when they refused to explain or justify it.

And this was 10 years ago. Nice to know the more things change...

You guys should look into ATT Uverse. I recently switched from Comcast 16MB blast internet to 12MB uverse and somehow I actually have a faster downstream (1.4 compared to 900-1.1). Comcast still has ATT beat on the upstream though.

That service is available in how many cities? Seriously. There are more little old ladies with rabbit ears than uverse subscribers.

FWIW Comcast did not lose any subscribers. Rather GROWTH WAS DOWN. They gained fewer new users than in the previous year. So SHOCKING, they added users and made more money.

Jesus. Reading comprehension FTMFW.

The funny thing is you are assuming they had zero or near zero subscriber loss and don't even realize it.

So I've had Comcast internet, cable, and phone for a very long time now, and the price is outrageous. I'm thinking about calling Verizon up now that Fios is available in our area. Has anyone went from Comcast to Verizon? If so, what do you think? Is the price any better?

Just do the comparison yourself. Keep in mind Verizon doesn't want to do any metering of your internet or screw with your packets, last I heard. Me and everyone I know are just biding our time until FiOS become available in our area and we're all switching.

Comcast's CEO Brian Roberts, while acknowledging he was not pleased with the results, believes that the drop in subscriptions is temporary. "We think we understand what happened and have it was a Comcastrophy" he said on the company's earnings call.

ppp

I can't say for Fios, since they're dragging their feet making it available in my area. But their DSL service is way more reliable, haven't had any stoppages in service, compared to constant long interruptions with Comcast.

Comcast blows, random outages. I know enough about this space to understand that comcast isn't serious about upgrading their infrastructure. Not their internet SP potion at least. I did just get an additional 20+ HD channels, but i really could care less about Bravo HD or whatever else.

The other issue is the cable infrastructure in the US is so Shoddy that we might as well use wireless

Overcharge them, put caps in downloading, and make excuses why the service isn't better =Lose customers.

Oh, and Free porn for 30 seconds during the super bowl didn't help!!

i thought uverse was a satellite service though... why isnt it available everywhere?

Uverse is not satellite. But the boxes are weird. They sync together wirelessly. So if your internet goes out, bye bye tv & phone.

FIOS is how the internet should be done. You get what you pay for. No caps, no throttling, no secret alliance with the RIAA.

Comcast users, does anyone know if comcast made the "bandwith meter" public for broadband customers?

basic cable cost you a shit load of money each month even if you get a combo deal with internet it is still a crap load........

Cable needs to push docsis 3.0 faster than is now. Theres no incentive to go with cable if the prices are higher and the internet is slower.

Comcast is making back some of the money by now *requiring* the $99 fee to have their idiot installers come out and plug in the modem. I moved to a different state and they weren't able to transfer my service, so they wanted to treat me as a new customer, charge me $99 and wait a week without internet to have an installer come out. (The last installer I had was one of the dumbest people I have ever met in my life - even the dispatcher was getting annoyed at him!) Asked them to do the self install, they said no, I went with Clearwire... which unfortunately is partially owned by Comcast, but it was the lesser of two evils.

U-Verse works and as a telephone company, I believe they are still required to have 98% uptime by the FCC. Comcast, on the other hand, was down for 8 days straight in 6 months. Problem is, AT&T's FastAccess DSL client does not support 64-bit OSes and their customer support was worse than Comcast's, so it was a no go for me.
