“The city said some resident-facing IT services are out of service due to the incident and that it may take time for those to be restored. The city did not say what those affected services are.

“However, the city’s 911 and 311 systems, as well as employee payroll, remain operational,” the city said.

In the statement, the city said it is working with law enforcement and cybersecurity experts to limit further risks”

I know right?! It's a sad day when zero nefarious people would want that data for what ever schemes and machinations. Speaks volumes about the value of Columbus data.

How much money could a mid-sized city like Columbus, OH possibly have available to pay a ransom? and if they did, what would be the political fallout with voters seeing their tax money going to some Russky crooks?

These ransom guys are lower than the lowest. Of course, they clearly operate with the OK of the Russian government, where corruption is a feature, not a bug. I have to wonder how much Putin gets each year as his cut of ransomware payments.
They're organizing into actual companies and corporations with large valuations. i think they've been even posting on job boards and conducting legitimate interviews, etc.. some probably even paying taxes for the appearance of legitimacy

So maybe having the backend on outdated equipment might be the way to go. Nobody ever ransomwared a vax/vms system. Or even alpha/vms.
