OK, so just currious. I bought my copy of MW2, and must admit I am slightly upset w/ the whole forced steam integration, and the no dedicated servers. I thought those got resolved and fixed, but now I just found out, its like that and we are stuck with it that way.

Well heres my situation. I am having a LAN on saturday, and we will have about 10-14 people attending. One of the games we want to play is COD MW2. The thing is, there is no internet connection or wont be, just a local network. I'm sure the good majority of us bought the game maybe not all of us, but previously, you could share a key behind the same router, and still all play LAN's. Thats how we did it w/ COD4 and COD5.

How on earth can we do this with 6? Are we just out of luck, its impossible to play local only? Full fledged online is the only way its possible?

You will need to have an active internet connection at the LAN party and everyone will be required to sign-in to Steam. No way around this afaik.

So it is possible to play this on a LAN? As long as there is enough internet connectivity for the Steam login you can play within the LAN?

If this is the case then I will still buy. Once I heard there was no dedicated server support I took that to mean there wasn't any LAN play. I just need to know that there is true LAN support.

You can setup a private match and invite all your friends. I believe an internet connection is still required though.

Apparently nobody knows what offline mode is when involving Steam.

If you have no internet connection you can still play your games. As long as the game is installed you will be able to play it using offline mode. In regards to illegally distributing the game to your friends that haven't bought it, that won't be happening.

*This is assuming that you're able to start up a listen server without connecting to IWNet.

You have to connect to Steam online first before you can enable Offline Mode.

I tried this question in another thread, but it seems somewhat related to this discussion (hope you don't mind OP)

Has anyone figured out how to make a Private Match ranked, or create a ranked match that only those you invite can join?

A buddy and I played a private match today but did not receive any XP for the match. If this can't be done it is quite disheartening. There are five of us that really enjoyed playing MW together just the five of us, but if we can't play alone and rank up, that's not very cool.

Edit: To add to the conversation, I just tried putting Steam in Offline mode, then launched MW2 MP. When I click play it says that Steam must be online to play. Same thing with co-op Spec-ops.

So, it looks like IW fucked the lan people. Hard.

Yeah just another example of why MW2 sux and why many are disturbed with their decisions for the PC version.

What I would probably tell you to do, is download the "no steam crack". This would probably enable you guys to play lan together. I am not 100% sure though. If the multiplayer part of it makes you connect to steam first, you might be screwed.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Actually, you have to connect to Steam once and make sure auto login is enabled. If it isn't, you will not be able to play in offline mode.

this is how you would do it, each account just needs to connect once to save your username info locally. as long as you have the option checked, then you can play offline whenever you want.

the problem is of course iwnet, if you can't start/join a game without connecting to them then you're screwed.

another thing I need to ask, since I see people here claiming this all the time, what kind of situation would prevent you from getting internet access at a lan party? it always sounds like a hypothetical, since I really don't understand why you would choose to have it somewhere you can't get connected. if there's enough people so that you would need space, then you should just choose a proper venue, if not then who's house doesn't have internet, and why would you do it there? it just doesn't make sense to me without the details. I'd be as pissed as the next guy when we get shafted on lan features, but I'm also not a moron who just goes "no lan! rabble rabble rabble" at every slightly inconvenienced setup.

my friends and i often host lan parties in the middle of the forest

At a large LAN party like Quakecon, they usually block the ports to such programs( like Steam) as it uses too much bandwidth if 1000+ are connected and slows the network.

And some places, especially for impromtu lan parties (i.e. Church basement) don't always have internet connections.

Besides, nearly everyone assumes they can start torrenting crap at a lan party.

nope, nothing will run via your lan, you will all go out and connect to a server on the net, even if it one made by you.

heck with QuakeCon they may be big enough that steam / valve has a special connection for them, or they simnply only allow access to the authentication servers and that is it, all other access is blocked.

no you cant do ranked private servers.. thats typical for most games that use a ranking system.. since it keeps people from being able to stack their ranks by playing friends and just killing everyone to get better stats..

nah quakecon gives you full access to the internet.. they just filter BT protocol and p2p protocol connections..if a lan connection exceeds X amount of bandwidth use it shapes the connection.. and heck even some events dont even do that..

well, that makes sense in the context of IW's best buy chat response "we want you to play the game the way we intended"

We just like playing against one another, enjoy it more that way.

I guess we'll have to play online to try to rank up, and then play private matches once we've gained some rank. That sucks.

Also, does anyone else think that some of these 'optimized for 18 players' maps seems a little large for 6v6 or 9v9?

Are you sure? a friend and I played 1v1 last night in a private game over the internet and it was ranked... at least I was completing challenges and leveling.

You were getting higher ranks and such? Can you detail how you did that please? Very interested.

On a console infront of your tv?

Oh, I get it. Heh heh!

Well, I refuse!!
